Phillipsburg, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is part of the New York metropolitan area. The town was named for Colonel Samuel Phillips (1732-1820), who donated land to the township in 1819. The first sighting of a telescope in Phillipsburg was on July 3, 1794 by George Washington and his aides as they looked out over Mount Vernon from Upper Egypt Heights. Philipsburgh became an important center for scientific research because of its location on one of the most important astronomical locations in North America at that time. In 1815, Commodore Charles Wainwright commissioned Nicholas-Jacques Conte to build the first successful telescope in North America at Philipsburgh Point on Lower Delaware Bay. In 1854, John Cranch erected a large observatory and began using it to study star clusters and other objects near Earth's orbit around the sun. This helped make stars easier to see than before and made possible his famous double helix diagram of stellar evolution which still remains an excellent guide to understanding these eternal mysteries today!

Phillipsburgh also saw early development with construction beginning on what is now known as "The Old Post Office" in 1832 and completion two years later; it served as both courthouse and jail until 1840 when it became home to local merchants and farmers who built new buildings on its present site near Market Square (later renamed State College). Phillipsburgh experienced significant growth following America's Civil War due to its location within easy reachof major Union armies Camp Chase and Trenton along with its busy commercial district including mills operated by Morris & Company, shipbuilding yards operated by Barclay Brothers & Co., tanneries operated by Haskell & Skinner, flour mills ran by James Valentine & Sons and others during that era before declining thereafter into rural obscurity although some farms remain standing today adjacent to Route 965 between Philipsburg and Glassboro while other structures have been destroyed or converted to other uses such as residences or churches
