Phillipsburg is a village in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,510 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is unincorporated and has no local government. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first settler in Phillipsburg was John Phillips who arrived in 1795 and surveyed the town site. The town was named for General Philip Schuyler, who fought with America during the Revolutionary War. In 1801, Phillipstown (now called Philipsburg) became a township in Hunterdon County and remained so until 1925 when it became an incorporated borough. In 1814-15, James McKay built a mill on the east side of what is now Huntingdon Avenue in Phillipsburg. After his death in 1816, his widow started the mill again and continued to operate it until her death in 1840. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1865 but had been rebuilt by 1880. A post office was established at Philipsburgh on March 14, 1800, under the name of Harrisonville; it changed its name to Phillipsburg on November 20th of that year after being selected as one of five towns within Hunterdon County to receive such designation from then-Governor Morris Rutgers. The first postmaster general of New Jersey was James McKay (1801-1805). By 1825 Philipsburgh had 4 stores and 11 homes; there were also two public schools which opened soon afterwards: one for boys (graded 3rd grade) and one for girls (graded 1st grade). A gristmill operated here until 1862 when it burned down due to an electrical failure while grinding flour for market due to high voltage levels present from nearby wires used by farmers throughout central NJ . Thereafter only animal feed mills could grind flour because electric power wasn’t available at that time for grinding flour onsite like today! In 1895 a new water tower/pump came online which increased production by 10% makingPhillipsburgh a “grain capital” once again! By 1907 over 100 businesses populated this business district with over 350 people employed therein! That same year saw another post office move into town from White Sands Township – still fresh off its building permit process – becoming known as “Doris Post Office” after Mrs Doris Haney who served as its first occupant before moving out 5 years later following her husband’s death suddenly while they were living aboard their vessel docked at Cumberland Harbor just outside Trenton NJ serving customers all along Main Line ! For many years this beautiful white frame building sat vacant across from Municipal Court reading “Doris Post Office” but finally moved indoors towards the end of 2018 having undergone numerous updates including brand new windows & roofing & some significant remodeling inside !!

Phillipsburg is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. The first European settlement in what is now Phillipsburg was made by John Phillips and his team of Adventurers in 1679. They named their landing site for Sir George Philips, 1st Baronet (1624-1712), an Englishman who had explored much of North America during the early part of the 18th century. In 1709, Philip's son John moved from Amboy to establish a permanent settlement here with his wife Sarah and six children under the name of "Newburgh". The area that would eventually become Phillipsburg was initially swampy and under cultivation only for raising sheep and poultry. In 1763, General James Knyphausen ordered Colonel Nicholas Howe to build him a fortification on this strategic location between Perth Amboy and Brunswick Landing on the Delaware River opposite Philadelphia. On October 13, 1763, Howe arrived at Phillipsburg with 1,500 men after crossing over from Trenton on horseback. He soon realized that he would need more troops to garrison this new outpost since it was only 26 acres (11 hectares) wide at its widest point and consisted only of four small huts. Nevertheless, he began construction immediately upon arriving and within two months had erected twenty-one walled bastions totaling in height and width along two long sides forming an arc around a inner ditch embattled against river attack from upstream or downstream sides. By late 1763 almost all of Hunterdon County had been added to America as part of its emerging revolutionary period following independence from Great Britain; thus there were no impediments preventing American settlers from moving into what are today considered parts of Hunterdon County including Philipsburgh/Newburgh Township which lay within English East Jersey then Dutch West Jersey before becoming US territory after Confederation in 1837). On July 12, 1764 Captain John Cook sailed upriver past present day Philipsburg laden with supplies for British forces engaged in Operation Neptune's Spear attacking French positions Alongsetters Ferry near Princeton Junction while en route back downriver to Manhattan via Trenton Bay Bridgehead; having made landfall just south of where he later landed his supplies aboard HMS "Phoenix" - one week prior to Major General George Washington's retreat across Monmouth Bay - Cook reported back favorably about conditions ashore at Philbinstown through various messengers before returning northward downriver on October 8 without sighting any enemy forces whatever... This event became known as Cook's Fiasco when subsequent reports failed to corroborate his findings adding credence not solely to French Kendall’s story but also possibly other sources related thereto [emphasis mine].
