Phillipsburg, New Jersey is a small town located in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. The local patriot leader John Sullivan rallied local citizens and rebuilt Biddle’s home within a few weeks using salvaged materials from that firefight as well as some he had acquired himself from surrounding homes that had been looted or destroyed by British troops during their occupation of America.). In 1800 Adam Clarke moved to Philipsburgh from West Milford where he had been born some years earlier. He engaged in various business ventures including tanning hides and became involved with politics as an agent for Philip Schuyler (the future 2nd US President). He served as Town Treasurer from 1800 until his death in 1824 while also holding other office at Sandy Hook (now Sayreville) Township which encompassed much of southeastern Gloucester County at that time.. A post office called Philipsburg was established in 1813; it remained open until 1959. As early as 1816 one Gideon Welles donated land east of Center Square for use as a public square; this square eventually became known as Welles Park following his death in 1865.. During World War II Phillipsburg experienced significant bombings due to shortages of munitions produced inside Britain due to Hitler's "Axis strategy". One such bombing took place on December 12th 1944 when over 20 homes were destroyed with no injuries reported among those inside - this event is considered one of Phillippsburg's most notorious crimes.. Phillipsburg has experienced several name changes throughout its history: It received its current name from Captain Phillips' community which grew up around him; then it changed back again after being chosen by members of Congress because no one else wanted it; finally it reverted back to its original name upon becoming an incorporated municipality
