Phillipsburg is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Princeton–Newark, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Phillipsburg was first settled by Europeans in 1682 as what is now called "Upper Philipsburgh Township", named for Sir James Philips, 4th Baronet who had bought land from the Lenape people east of Newark. In 1714, Philip's grandson and namesake Philip Pickering sold the township to John Thomson for £5. Thomson set up a mill on the river near what is now Phillipsburg School and built a gristmill on Mill Creek which still flourishes today. In 1868, when Rutgers University moved to Camden from Newark, it chose Phillipsburg as its new campus and established several buildings here including the then $10 million Old Main Building which today houses both Rutgers' undergraduate and graduate schools as well as administrative offices (the present Science Hall). The town became an incorporated municipality in 1903. When Rutgers vacated their old campus in 1965 and moved to Metuchen (northwest of Trenton), Phillipsburg lost much of its business furniture industry but regained some importance with its position within New Jersey's education system as a center for higher education teaching students from all over North America at various colleges and universities such as Princeton University and Yale University before eventually joining those institutions full-time when Northeastern Polytechnic Institute merged with Rutgers in 2014 forming New Jersey Institute of Technology. After years of decline due to suburbanization, job loss during the Great Recession and increased competition from nearby Middlesex County towns such as Edison Junction (to the south), Woodbridge Township (to the north) and Hackettstown (to the west), Phillipsburg has seen recent gentrification along with growth in business catering to residents who are expensive enough not to live anywhere else near their work or school but still need access to public transportation without having to leave their neighborhoods which offers them advantages like easier access to jobs than people living further away whose commutes take hours off workdays that would make commuting there impractical or impossible given their wealth accumulated since they last resided there rather than starting fresh somewhere new. This process has led many businesses closed down – most notably JWTF Beauty Salon – while others have converted into condos or other institutional uses making Phillipsburg one of just few towns remaining within contiguous Union County where all three municipalities are located side-by-side without any intervening rural areas between them save for tiny villages scattered aroundElizabethtown Township on Long Island across Lake Champlain where college students live & commuting costs money & provides no social services so small villages lack cultural lifebloods apart from religious services offered by monasteries
