Phillipsburg is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. Phillipsburg was founded by Dutch colonists in 1764 and named after Philipszantine captain John Phillips. The town was incorporated as a village on March 20, 1872, from portions of Easton Township and South Orange Township. On February 14, 1907, it became a town again when all of Hunterdon County united to form a new state of New Jersey. The name "Phillipsburg" originated with Captain John Phillips who discovered the site of the present-day town on October 6, 1764 while exploring upriver from Newark Bay for what would become America. He called it "Fulton," but his choice likely led to more confusion since other Europeans had also named nearby towns after themselves: Philipsburgh (Hague), Pinckney (Pickering), and Monmouth (Morris). The first post office in Phillipsburg opened on December 12, 1824; it was renamed Catonsville on January 8, 1827 because its incumbent moved to Philadelphia that year. In 1868 the Delaware and Hudson Railroad built a line through Phillipsburg connecting Verona Junction in Middlesex County with Trenton and points north; this made Phillipsborough an important center for transportation. By 1900 there were 130 businesses in the community employing over 1,000 people and generating $14 million in economic activity annually; however during World War I many businesses closed or went out of business due to shortages caused by military production restrictions. On May 10th 1917 local men responded to an attack upon American soldiers near Monmouth Junction by attacking two British troops accompanying General “Black Jack” Pershing’s Expeditionary Force into New York State Aftermath saw over 100 casualties among Americans including 19 killed outright along with 5 captured British officers/soldiers This event helped start what came to be known as “The Phillippsburg Massacre” which continued until 1919 when similar attacks ceased

Phillipsburg was founded in 1713 by Nicholas Phillips and his brother John. The community lies on the Susquehanna River, about 12 miles west of Trenton. In 1837, the town was renamed for George Washington. It had a population of 2,500 in 1850 and grew to 4,000 by 1880. The downtown area became an important commercial center during the19th century; it still retains some of its original buildings and businesses. After Union troops burned down much of the downtown in 1863 during the American Civil War, Phillipsburg rebuilt quickly using local materials and labor. By 1870, it had grown to 8,000 people and remained an important center for trade until the early 20th century when its economy changed with industrial development in nearby towns such as Trenton and Camden. In 1935, Phillipsburg was merged with neighboring Dunellen into what is now known as Union County.
