Phillipsburg is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1724 and its name comes from Philips (a maker of wickerwork). The first post office was established in 1814. Phillipsburg annexed the borough of South Brunswick in 1868, becoming one of the four municipalities that made up Trenton Township until 1954 when it withdrew from the township and became an independent village. According to the United States Census Bureau, Phillipsburg has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 4,813 people, 2,697 households, 1,711 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,584.4 people per square mile (521.1/km²). There were 3,045 housing units at an average density of 585.9 per square mile (251.0/km²). Philipsburg was founded on December 12, 1755 by Nicholas Phillips and his family as a small settlement on the north side of Delaware River. The first settler named Phillips also came from Scotland and landed in what is now Hunterdon County in 1758. The town was incorporated as a borough on March 9, 1846, from portions of East Brunswick Township. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population had increased to 11,451. Phillipstown School District serves Phillipsburg Borough while Monmouth Boulevard School District provides educational services for students in neighboring East Brunswick Township and Lodi Township which include parts of Phila., Camden Yards and Princeton Junction High School serve students west of I-95/US Route 32 within Mercer County; these districts are not part of Philipsburg Borough limits but are included within NJ Transit's Trenton–Ewing Commuter Rail network service area. Phillipsburgh has two publiclibrary branches - one near US Route 3 southbound and one near US Route 22 eastbound - both open 7 days a week with free borrowing privileges for all residents including those who do not have library cards or use institutional library systems located in other municipalities outside Trenton-Ewing boundaries (e.g., Paterson). The current name is taken from Nicholas Phillips who settled there about 16 years before James Buchanan became President in 1846 according to some history books being researched for this paper (see map below). He renamed it after himself because he felt that there would be few people living there given that he had been so successful outgrowing his original home country Scotland by many miles!
