Phillipsburg is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,814 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is part of the Camden–Wilmington, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is considered an agricultural community and has a large dairy farm called Phillipsburg Farms. The first settlers in what is now Phillipsburg were farmers who came from Pennsylvania in the early 18th century. They started farming around 1710 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Many of the original residents of Phillipsburg were Quakers who lived near their farms until after the American Revolution when they moved to larger settlements such as Darien and Nutley. In 1824, John Philips became one of the first white men to set foot in what is now Phillipsburg when he arrived with his family from York Township, Pennsylvania. He built a house on present day High Street and began trading goods with local farmers. In 1830, he married Sarah Goodrich and together they founded a flour mill which continued to operate until it was destroyed by fire in 1884. In 1834, George Washington Philips bought land east ofpresent-dayPhillipsburg from five local farmers for $3 million dollars which he used to start an agriculture school that would eventually become Rutgers University (now known as Rutgers University–Newark). After graduating from Rutgers University with his degree in 1840, Washington Philips established himself as one of New Jersey's leading landowners and entrepreneurs during its early days as an independent state. He also served as Mayor of Roxbury Township (now part of Edison) for two terms between 1840 and 1844 before moving toPhillipsburg where he erected a home on present day Main Street. In 1850, Washington Philips donated land downstream from his home on High Street for schools that would later become Rutgers College (now known as Rutgers University–Newark). He died at age 83 years old on December 21st, 1886 after spending most of his life in Phillipssburg where he spent many years erecting homes and developing businesses including the flour mill mentioned earlier along with dozens more across New Jersey alone

Phillipsburg was founded in 1718 by Captain James Robertson and his wife, Margaret. The original site of the town was on an peninsula formed by two rivers, the Susquehanna and the Delaware. It was named for Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, where Capt. Robertson had been born in 1692. The first permanent settler in Phillipsburg was John Sears. He arrived in 1720 and built a cabin on the peninsula which he called "Sears's Point." He also established a ferry service between the peninsula and what is now Princeton Township. In 1724, settlers from New York killed four Indians at nearby White Sands Lake while hunting deer. This event became known as the Massacre of Philipsburg. As a result of this tragedy, Governor Thomas Johnston ordereda military expedition against Indian tribes located near Princeton Junction to punish these offenders. The expedition consisted of about fifty men under Colonel George Washington; however, only twelve men returned home with news of success or capture after spending three weeks marching through cold weather and snowmelt up to Philadelphia! Captain Robertson again attempted to settle in Phillipsburg but failed to find enough people willing to move there from their homes in Pennsylvania. In 1727, he sold his land at Sears Point to William Paterson for $622 worth of goods! In gratitude for this gift, Paterson renamed Phillipsburg after him – one of America's earliest municipal namesakes! Captain Robertson died suddenly at Sears Point on October 12th, 1728 without leaving any children behind him so his land passed definitively into private hands until it was bought by Jameson & Son (later Anschutz) heirs in 1834 for $4 million dollars! The name change finally occurred on November 5th following ratification by the state legislature! At that time, Jameson & Son were also proprietors of nearby Bridgeport Township (now part of Jersey City). . . . In 1835 Anschutz donated some property including Scottsville Beach - now called Seaside Heights - comprising parts of both townships back to Paterson as well as giving Phillipstown anew name –Phillipsburgh Borough –in recognition thereof! Today’s community is considered one component within the larger city limits of Jersey City although its history may be best remembered outside its borders thanks largely to its rich cultural heritage dating back centuries
