It is the second-largest town in Hunterdon County after Paterson and is the largest center of trade for the township. The Township of Phillipsburg was organized on March 14, 1785 by settlers from Pennsylvania who came to what is now Phillipsburg during the American Revolution. The first post office in Phillipsburg was established on April 15, 1786. The name "Phillipsburgh" originally referred to a settlement near Burlington Heights in Mercer County which had been abandoned due to Indian raids. The first store in Phillipsburg opened on May 10, 1828 and it remained open until 1865 when it closed because of prohibitionism. In 1892, Philipsburgh became an incorporated town with a population of 6,000 people and became known as one of Hunterdon County's "gilded age" towns with its high concentrations of luxury hotels and manufacturing businesses. In 1916, there were 1,500 residents living in Philipsburgh but by 1980 this number had dwindled to just over 500 residents due to loss of jobs in nearby industries such as textiles and plastics that went out of business during the 1970s recession. But despite these challenges, Philipsburgh has experienced some recent growth including new development around its riverfront; continued investment into education; and increased popularity among retirees from neighboring municipalities such as Paterson or Suffern who have moved into Phillipsburg seeking easy access to all thatHunterdon has to offer without leaving their homes or communities.

In fact, many key figures from Philadelphia's revolutionary past have been associated with Philipsburg- including John Adams (1st President), Benjamin Franklin (3rd President), Thomas Paine (2nd Vice President), and George Washington (4th President). During their time as prisoners at Yorktown, General Washington and his troops were forced to eat horse meat due to lack of other food options available to them. This experience led him to develop a strong dislike for horses, which is evident in his later years when he began railing against "themonkeycage" system that kept slaves in dark dungeons without proper food or water supply. In response to this issue, Washington ordered all military commanders throughout America to provide their own personal horse herds so that they could perform better on campaign trips across America. This policy contributed significantly to America's success during the Revolutionary War - enabling them to outpace their enemies while advancing northward into Canada. After independence was proclaimed in 1776, many people from various parts of Pennsylvania traveled eastward towards New York City in order support their brethren fighting for freedom under British rule. One such individual was Captain Phillips who arrived in Philadelphia on September 15th following a long journey through Maryland and Delaware. Upon arrival, he organized some 40 soldiers into what would be known as "the band" - an effort aimed at rallying other patriots together before any potential engagements should take place outside of Philadelphia proper. It was here that Captain Phillips first demonstrated his resolve as an individual leader; prior to this point he had only provided leadership through song lyrics or speeches from atop Mount Independence Hill!
