Phillipsburg is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,691 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is one of the oldest settlements in Mercer County and was first established as a community on the east bank of the Sassafras River. It became an incorporated village on December 1, 1810. The Parish of Phillipsburg was chartered on November 13, 1758 by Nicholas de la Rocque from what is now Burlington Township in Middlesex County. In 1792 it merged with the Parish of Sayreville to form the present-day Mercer County Municipality. On October 14, 1695, by order of Governor Thomas Dongan, settlers James and John Best set out from their farmstead at Ferry Landing for Philipsburg (now called Bridgeport) on the East Branch Susquehanna River which they named for Sir George Phillips who had come to America as captain of HMS "Acasta" in 1694. They built a log cabin and toll bridge over that river near where it forms today's exit off Interstate 95 southbound at milepost 921. The first settler here was James Best who arrived in 1695 with his family (two brothers and four sisters). The Best family remained here until 1815 when they moved upstream to Ridgefield Township because its land would have been too valuable for farming alone on this side of the Susquehanna River. Phillipsburg experienced explosive growth due to its annexation by neighboring Ridgefield Township in 1872 following a referendum vote by township residents followed by ratification by county officials days later. At its peak during World War II there were more than 10,000 people living here full time or part time; however since then most residents have either retired or left for other townships within Mercer County or elsewhere within New Jersey altogether due to dwindling natural resources and rising costs of living along with competition from larger townships throughout NJROTCNJ programs across our state have forced many people out into the open market again including some who may have originally settled here through ROTCNJ program opportunities back when we still had much hope for a better future despite all evidence otherwise Now that our economy has stabilized we are seeing renewed interest among those who once abandoned their homes due to economic hardships return home but only if they can find quality schools available to them again such as Phillipsburg High School . There seems not be enough Jobs available so many feel like they need leave yet again like my Grandma did when I told her about this website she said “well okay well whatever you want to do” so don’t get me wrong I love my Grandma but life just isn’t going how we wanted it too go back to being COLORED SCHOOLMARKS AGAIN WE SHOULD BE FREE FROM THAT!
