The area that would become Phillipsburg was first named Deerfield Township because Deerfield Manor was located there. The name change to Philipsburg after Captain Phillips' voyage of discovery in 1606 which led to the naming of this particular town for him. The area now comprising Phillipsburg had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before white settlers arrived in droves during the late 17th century. By 1780, most of what is nowPhillipsburg had been surveyed and set aside as part of a land grant to Colonel George Washington by King George III as an act of homage following his victory over British forces at Yorktown in 1781. In 1824, when Hunterdon County was created from parts of Essex and Monmouth counties, Philipsburgh took its current form as a result of the consolidation of two other small towns: Philipsburg (the original name) and Bloomfield Township. At that time, most residents lived on farms or worked off farmsteads throughout much of their lives; however, some began commuting to larger cities or shopping malls near Philadelphia or Trenton whenever they could afford it while others developed businesses within their villages themselves such as grocery stores and dry goods stores. A new school building was erected on Main Street in 1832 and named for Amos Dickson, an early settler and mayor of Philipsburg. In 1847, one of the largest mills in America was established near Phillipsburg with $15 million dollars worth of equipment. The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1960 after being bought by Champion Paper Company
