The Phillipsburg-Easton School District covers parts of the town and has a population of 10,653 students in grades 7 through 12. The first Europeans to visit what is now Phillipsburg were Dutch traders sailing down the Delaware River in 1664. They named their landing place "New Amsterdam" after their new home city in Holland. English traders also visited New Amsterdam in 1664 and renamed it "Phillipsburgh." In 1701, the Treaty of Paris awarded lands to both sides of the Delaware River as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. These lands included much of what is now Hunterdon County and all but a small portion of eastern Mercer County. Phillipsburgh became an American town on November 1, 1788 when its inhabitants voted by referendum to become part of the new United States of America. After becoming an American town, Philipsburgh underwent several name changes until 1824 when it became known as Phillipsburg Township due to its location within that township's boundaries (at least until 1827). According to the United States Census Bureau, Phillipsburgh had a total area of , all land. As per local legend, one day during World War II residents dug up remains belonging to Private First Class Lewis Hildebrandt who had been missing since December 1944 while serving with Company C/327th Infantry Regiment (the "Blue Devils") with Headquarters Company near Winchester Heights in Butler County during Operation Overlord. As per Army regulation at that time only enlisted members could be buried without family or friends present; so this discovery inaugurated a nationwide search for Private First Class Lewis Hildebrandt which eventually produced results more than 20 years later when his body was found approximately two miles east side entrance road off Route 27A just north of Philipsburg near Roman Catholic Church called Our Lady Of Good Hope Parish Hall on October 14th 2009 by Trooper Jeffrey Hoffman with NJ State Police Search and Rescue Unit assisted by Village Volunteer Fire Department ambulance unit

It straddles the border of Morris and Hunterdon counties. The first European to visit Phillipsburg was Captain John Smith in 1714 when he explored and charted the mouth of the Delaware River. He named it "Chesapeake". On September 16, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, Philipsburgh residents joined with other towns in resistance to British forces under General George Washington as Patriot Town. In 1818, Philipseburgh became known as "Phillipsburgh Township" after James Phillips (1762-1841), an early settler and captain in Company D of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment who served in both the French and Indian Wars. When Hunterdon County was formed on April 14, 1821 from portions of Middlesex and Essex Counties, Philipsburgh became part of that new county. In 1827, Phillipsburgh annexeed neighboring Pleasantville to form a township again under name "Phillipsburgh Township". On December 15th 1861 Phillipstown Borough officials voted by acclamation to secede from Hunterdon County if they did not feel their taxes were fair share for being within borders of Morris County while also feeling that they had been ignored by government leaders including US Congressman Robert Ewing Jr., father of Ulysses S. Grant The borough would later become part of Bergen County after that county was created on February 3rd 1876 from parts of Middlesex and Union Counties following a referendum vote by its citizens . According to Census Bureau data from 2000 through 2010,[1] there have been increasing numbers of people living in Phillipsburg since its incorporation as a township over time: According to Census data from 2000[2], Phillipsburg's population numbered 611; however this figure increased to 735 by 2010.[3] Over time more homes have been built within town limits which has led to an even more diverse mix Of people living here today: according to 2010 census data,[4] those residing in Phillipsburg include 553 White Americans (47% male[5]); 362 Black Americans (29% male); 141 Hispanic/Latino individuals (10%); 10 Persons With A Disability; all making up 38% or just over half (54%)of total populace
Phillipsburg was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, New Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area. Phillipsburg is located north of Trenton and east of Asbury Park on Route 56. The first settlers in Phillipsburg were George Washington and his family who came from Virginia in 1764. They erected a cabin near what is now State College Avenue and settled there for six years before moving to what is now Phillipsburg Township in 1768. There they built two sawmills which were the first in Mercer County. In 1814, James Gadsden became the first Governor of New Jersey after being elected as such from Mercer County by popular vote; he also served as Mayor of Trenton from 1815 to 1830. In 1835, Philipsburgh Township was formed from parts of Asbury Park and Trenton with a population of 3,000 people In 1861, when Princeton University moved to Princeton Heights in central Princeton Township (now part of East Brunswick), it donated land on which the current campus stands; this donation made Phillipsburgh one of only two townships within Princeton University's boundaries that did not join forces with it when it merged into the larger university in 1947 (the other being Westster Township). Phillipsburgh had a school until 1924 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by World War I tuition rates hikes; however, since then its residents have gone back to school through various programs offered by local schools or private organizations. The post office opened on October 12th 1954 and served Phillipstown until 1970 when it was discontinued because USPS monopoly ended with ZIP code 90822 becoming available for delivery outside NJ
