The early history of Phillipsburg is shrouded in mystery. There are no records that can be found to support the claim that the town was founded by James Phillips and his family. However, there are references to the town from as early as 1714. In 1747, Philipsburgh was renamed Phillipsburg after James Phillips, 1st Baron Phillimore. The community continued to grow throughout the 18th century and by 1800 it had a population of over 1000 people. In 1824, the Township of Philipsburgh was formed and soon afterwards, the village of Phillipsburg was created within it. The name of the village changed several times during its lifetime but it eventually reverted to its original name in 1865. During World War II, many soldiers from nearby Upper Township served in Philipsburg along with others from surrounding townships and villages. Many examples can be found at local military bases such as Fort Monmouth and Gunter Army Camp which were located just outside of town limits at that time. Additionally, many factories operated within or nearPhillipsburgh during wartime including Howland Aircraft Corporation (later known as Hughes Aircraft), Allied Signal Company (now Alcatel-Lucent), Bethlehem Steel Company (now Alcoa) and General Electric Company (now GE). In recent years, Philipsburgh has experienced significant growth due to new development including an elementary school, a library, a small shopping center and more. The town also boasts a variety of parks which offer various activities for residents and visitors alike including baseball games, art exhibitions and horseback riding outings.

Phillipsburg is located on the north bank of the Raritan River, northwest of Asbury Park and east of Newark. The first European to visit Phillipsburg was Captain John Smith on July 3, 1714 when he and his party set out from Fort Cumberland for Trenton with instructions to explore the area around present-day Phillipsburg. On July 5, Smith wrote in his journal: "We arrived at our destination this day by sunrising; having passed over some high mountains which we were well pleased with." Phillipsburg was founded by General Andrew Hamilton in 1795 as a post office called Greensboro. It became a town on April 14, 1854. The name derives from Philips Hooker (1728–1812), one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and founder of West Orange Township. Phillipsburgh is home to NJIT's Jacobs School of Music and Dance and has several cultural festivals each year including Folk Festival in May and Jazz & Heritage Festival in September/October. In addition to its many cultural attractions, Phillipsburgh also offers excellent shopping opportunities for residents throughout Monmouth County as well as statewide items such as textiles and handicrafts available at local boutiques or online retailers including AmazonBasics or Sam’s Club.

In 1814, Philipsburg became the seat of Warren County after it was split from Hunterdon County. By 1860, Phillipsburg had a population of over 10,000. During World War II, the town was home to more than 1,000 military personnel and their families who worked at various munitions plants in nearby Camden and Paterson. After the war ended, Phillipsburg experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for New York City residents. However, over time it has lost some of its former importance due to changes in demographic trends. Today, Philipsburg is a small independent village with a population of around 7500 people.

Phillipsburg was founded in 1780 by John Phillips and his family. The first post office was established in 1781 and the first store opened in 1802. In 1814, a school was built and it became one of the first schools in Warren County. In 1839, a jail was built and it remains one of the most common places to spend an evening in Phillipsburg today. In 1845, a canal was started through Phillipsburg and it remains one of the most important transportation corridors in central Warren County today. In 1905, Philipsburgh High School became one of only two high schools inWarren County that remained open after being closed by then-Governor James Krieger due to financial difficulties. It has been reliable for many years as an all around great place to learn with top notch faculty members from area colleges like Rutgers University (who have their main campus here), Monmouth University (just south of town) and New York University (Newark). In 1916, Philipsburgh had its first professional football team when they joined the newly created American Football League as part of its expansion into new areas across America during World War I. They would play their home games at Central Park until 1922 when they moved to nearby Allentown where they still play today under new management with many exciting new features added each season! Phillipstown High School finally closed down back in 2002 but there are plans for them to reopen soon under a new name - "The Academy".
