Phillipsburg is a town in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is located on the southern border of Ocean County and just east of Monmouth Junction. It is bordered by Egg Harbor Township to the north and Brick Township to the east. The first inhabitants of Phillipsburg were Native Americans who lived near what is now known as Old Bridge Road and Asbury Park Boulevard. The area that now makes up Phillipsburg was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664 following a land grant from King Charles II of England. The Dutch colony was named Fort Nassau after his brother-in-law, Nicholas van Nassau, Count of Nassau (1587–1658). Philipsburgh Post Office was established in 1701, when it replaced an earlier post office called Hackensack which had been established in 1686. In 1739, during the French and Indian War, British troops burned down part of Fort Nassau foraging supplies nearby. In 1814, Samuel Prentice became the first white settler in Phillipsburg when he purchased 1 acre (0·9 km²) southeast of present-day Philipsburgh from John Brownell Sr.. He built a small log cabin on this parcel which served as his home until 1824 when he sold it to Amos Vail for $200+. Vail also founded what would become Vail's Mills paper mill on this site in 1825; this mill would continue operation until 1967. In 1830, Gideon Green bought 1/4 mile (0·6 km²) northeast of current day Philipsburgh from Prentice for $100$. Green later donated this land to Phillipsburg Township for use as a public school lot; today’s Philbrook Schoolhouse was erected on this tract in 1865. In 1831, Phillipa Haddon immigrated to America from Hanover with her family and began farming around what are now downtown Philipsburg and Asbury Park Boulevard; she would eventually become one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in American history with her own grocery store and bakery businesses operated out of these stores throughout much of 19th century NJR&D On July 10th 1840 Isaac Watts married Phillippi Haddon at Immaculate Conception Parish Church located just east side Asbury Park Blvd / Downtown Streetscape view looking south towards Main Street
