Perth Amboy, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population of the town was 10,521 at the 2010 census. Perth Amboy is located on the southern bank of the Delaware River. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Perth Amboy comes from Nicholas de Montfort who defeated King John at Monmouth Battlefield on October 4, 1279. He founded what became Perth Amboy after his victory. At that time it consisted of only a few houses and lots around what is now Main Street and Second Avenue. In 1795 an act was passed by the Legislature entitled "An Act to Encourage Industry in this Province" which created "the Township of Perth Amboy" within Middlesex County with a township committee to manage its affairs and provide for schools and other public services therein. The Township Committee had authority to levy taxes for fire protection, road construction etc., as well as providing for streetlights, drains and wells. In 1824 another act was passed which provided that "the Township of Perth Amboy be divided into two parts". One half would be situated along Second Avenue between Main Street and High Streets while the other half would be situated along Third Avenue between Market Street and State Road (now Livingston Avenue) On May 8th 1846 Englishman John Wetherill arrived in Perth Amboy with his family on board ship called "Eagle" from Boston Harbor bound for Canada via Philadelphia before reaching Cape May Court House where he intended to cross overland into America via Trenton NJ then takesteam upriver to Buffalo NY before landing at Queenstown on Long Island Sound opposite Staten Island - this journey took about six weeks! His wife Catherine Wetherill died during their crossing; however their three children did make it across but lost all their possessions including Watson's Clothing Factory & Goods Depot because they were not able to get passage either way! Wetherilltown began as a small village consisting of about 150 people near where First avenue meets Third avenue today’s market square . By 1860 there were 3 stores & 1 hotel open in what are now Wadsworth Plaza & Central Park north side Ferry service across river started daily Nov 15 1861 when ferryboat SS Albany crossed from boat house just south east corner current day Union Terminal @ 11am except holidays
