Perth Amboy, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,912 at the 2010 census. Perth Amboy is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It forms the eastern border of South Jim Thorpe Township and its western border is that of Sayreville Township. The first people to settle in Perth Amboy were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664. They built a small trading post on the upper Delaware River which they named "Nieuw Amsterdam." A later group from Netherland settled here in 1713 and called themselves "Trefoldert." In 1814, General Israel Putnam founded what would become Perth Amboy when he bought land along the river for $1 million from Nicholas D'Alvey. The town name was chosen because it sounded like an Indian word meaning place where two rivers meet (the Dutch word 'perth' means 'two'). The first school was erected in 1829 and classes began on October 7 that year. The first teacher was Mrs. Cassells who taught one class per day with 24 students total during her tenure. That same year, Reverend John Fenton established Presbyterian Church located on Main Street which soon grew into a large congregation with over 100 members. In 1830, Mr. Beal formed a company to build a canal through Perth Amboy but this project failed due to lack of funding and bequeathing problems within the community caused by money- motivations among other things such as envy towards those with wealthier backgrounds within society or jealousy towards others considered beneath them socially or economically speaking). In 1833, another group of Scotsmen arrived seeking fortune in America and set up shop at Meeting House Square near today's intersection of Market Street/Bridge Street/Route 524). This initial Scottish settler colony prospered for some time before being driven out by local Native Americans who had been living here since prehistory including various Lenape groups who had been occupying this area for centuries prior to then including parts of South Jim Thorpe Township now known as Sayreville Township . On December 29, 1840 Rev John Fenton led prayers for independence from Great Britain after years of peaceful protests across America against their oppressive rule (the event came about two years after British troops burned down his home near present-day North Bridge Streets section 3rd avenue & Second street) as well as growing frustration among AngloAmericans over continued forced labor – mainly indentured servitude – under conditions often resembling slavery while also experiencing high taxes rates and no say in government decision making despite being counted among one’s fellow citizens albeit without representation . In 1851 James Kappenborg purchased 2 lots adjoining what is now Park Avenue from Mr Beal for $600 more than what he paid for it previously just weeks prior! This indicates how rapidly PerthAmboy became an incorporated municipality less than 10 years later following James Kappenborg's purchase effective January 1st 1850 followed by unanimous approval by the voters at a special meeting held on February 13th 1850 having received notification via mail three months earlier via Order dated March 26th 4tober 49 .)A few years later another Norwegian settler, Lars Olson took up residence between Meeting House Square & Prospect Road - Partridge Place - owned now by his son Fredrik Olsen - after moving there from Norway aboard an American ship sailing eastward bound from New York City laden with goods destined for Liverpool disembarking at Pier 81 next door seemingly destination unknown until discovery made while trespassing August 15th 1889 whenfactoried ashore off Cookstown Beach NJ .)Lars Olson soon became mayoralty candidate running unopposed along w/Rev John Fenton (1820-1905) Delia Sweeney (1821-1900), James Kappenborg (1851-1910) Anthony Ryan (1872-1945), Harry Laughlin Sr.(1882-1966), Jens Petersen(1907-) James Kappenborg served continuously as Mayor beginning November 14th 1907 until his death on May 25th 1913 . He was succeeded by his son Anthony Ryan
