Perth Amboy, New Jersey is a borough located in Sussex County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 16,722. The borough was founded on November 5, 1854 by English and Dutch colonists who arrived on the Delaware River from what is now Philadelphia. The name "Perth" means "place of peace." The first settler in Perth Amboy was John Potter. In 1857, the Borough passed an act to incorporate as a borough with a $10 per capita tax rate and no property taxes. On May 10, 1860, the Boroughs charter was amended to allow for two types of property taxes: one for real estate and one for personal services such as cleaning or driving carriages. On April 15, 1868, voters passed a resolution authorizing the towns of Weehawken and Elizabethtown to become sister municipalities if they failed to pass legislation establishing their own municipal government within three years. On July 9th 1870 - just two months after Perth Amboy's incorporation - Weehawken submitted its bill establishing its own municipal government which became effective on October 1st 1870 under then-Mayor Joris van der Vaart (D). Under Mayor van der Vaart (D), Perth Amboy experienced rapid growth due to its location near Princeton University and high volume of business activity related to agriculture and manufacturing exports from nearby Newark Airport. In 1924 – following mayor James Ewing's successful bid for election as President of America – Perth Amboy received U.S.-level recognition when it became one of only six American cities granted city status by London’s Board of Trade also known as “The Garter City” because it had been awarded this distinction eight times prior including twice by King George V himself during his visit in 1923-24 shortfalling only Boston & New York City having both achieved this distinction multiple times each between 1915-1920 while Philadelphia earned four distinctions including being selected as an “Operating Metropolitan City” pursuant to provisions contained in Act No 2145 entitled An Act To Amend The Laws Of Pennsylvania Relative To Cities And Towns Controlled By Municipal Corporations *.*

However, this period also saw major economic decline due to competition from larger towns such as Trenton and Newark. In 1865, Perth Amboy became part of New Jersey and experienced yet another downturn with few new businesses opening up. It regained some popularity in the 1880s when railroads came to town and began transporting goods throughout New Jersey. However, this heyday eventually ended as well because of increased competition from other states. Since then, Perth Amboy has been largely a sleepy community with few cultural attractions or businesses that draw visitors to its streetside shops and restaurants.).
Perth Amboy, New Jersey was founded on December 24, 1764 by George Washington and his family. The town was named after the Fort Amboy in Massachusetts which was the main post for U.S. forces during the French and Indian War. The first recorded settler in Perth Amboy was Nicholas Saunderson who arrived in 1765. The town rapidly grew with many new residents coming to settle in what is now Perth Amboy Township from all over New Jersey. In 1812, a group of men led by John Woolridge platted a new township outside of Perth Amboy and called it Monmouth County. On January 1, 1813, the name of PerthAmbywas changed to PerthAmboy Township when it became part of Monmouth County. In 1834, the township became a borough and then a city on October 14th of that year when it passed into state control as a result of the NJ Constitution being amended that year. On May 15th 1914, City Hall was destroyed by fire and it has not been rebuilt since because strong winds caused it to collapse
