During World War II both countries' navies combined forces off Dog Head Point which resulted in many casualties due to minesweepers and torpedoes being used against Japanese vessels; some ships sunk while others narrowly escaped damage or capture by US Navy submarines USS Hummingbird (SS-316) and USS Shark (SS-314). After World War II ended Australia took over control ofDog Head Point from US Navy jurisdiction which continues up to present day as part of Australian territorial waters around New Jersey shoreline
