Perth Amboy, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 34,451. Perth Amboy is located on the Delaware River and its namesake riverfront includes part of the now-defunct Perth Amboy Bridge. The borough was formed from portions of Elizabeth Township in 1868 and from parts of Hudson Township in 1871. The first settlers to what would become Perth Amboy were Dutch farmers who founded a farm on the present-day east bank of the Delaware River in 1638. In 1714 Englishman John Smith landed at what is now Perth Amboy after being shipwrecked off Cape May and becoming lost for weeks while searching for his way home. The current town name was given to it by Nicholas Perrone during a meeting held to choose a new name for Elizabethtown following its incorporation as a borough on February 14, 1868. At that time, only 3 residents had registered with Borough Council; all other residents were based either at Elizabethtown or elsewhere within Middlesex County. In 1898 when Essex County was created from parts of Middlesex County, much of Perth Amboy including most of the riverfront area became part of Essex Park which also included much of Elizabethtown's land northward along Raritan Bay until that park was annexed by Newark in 1960 after an effort spearheaded by then-Mayor William Donaldson. Since then many businesses have relocated away from their original locations within town limits (such as JCPenney), but many others have reopened inside or adjacent to old brick buildings dating back to prewar days whenElizabethtown consisted almost entirelyof small farms and cottage gardens interconnected by dirt roads bisected only by occasional poles providing transportation between these scattered settlements. One such building still stands - The Masonic Lodge - built circa 1906 on what would later be renamed Crown Heights Drive near where Interstate 95now runs concurrent with Route 9 southbound just past Exit 4B off I-95 (the old bridge over Raritan Bay). It is the second-largest town in Middlesex County and the 10th-largest town in New Jersey. Perth Amboy is bordered by Newark to the north, Elizabeth to the east, and Uniondale to the south. The first permanent European settlers in Perth Amboy were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. The area that would become Perth Amboy was then known as Warwick Township. In 1854, a group of Englishmen led by Colonel John Purdy purchased land from the Lenape Indians for $1 per acre (the amount then worth about $ ). They named their new community after Perthshire, Scotland—a location they had seen on maps back home. In 1878, local residents voted to incorporate as a town and received its current name of Perth Amboy. On December 12 of that year, a fire destroyed most of what remained of Warwick Township and all but two houses in Perth Amboy—one belonging to Colleague Purdy himself and one donated by his wife Charity (née Marshall). However, this did not stop locals from continuing to pursue their dream of becoming a thriving community. They quickly rebuilt much of what had been lost and within three years had regained most of their former size and shape. Today's vibrant commercial district began developing during World War II when many businesses relocated from Newark because of bombings there; several restaurants opened up including La Belle France Café & Grill (now closed) and Black Angus Steakhouse & Saloon (now open). The war also created jobs for many people in local production plants such as Allied Biscuits Corporation which made doughnuts for military troops stationed overseas; General Electric manufactured light bulbs here; Dow Chemical Company built refrigerators here; etc.; while other companies such as American Can Opener Manufacturers produced various items needed for wartime homes like food cans and water bottles. A popular pastime among residents was picketing armybase commanders’ residences on Greenmount Avenue until 1967 when Mayor Harry Shapiro ordered city officials not to tolerate any protests against base activities without good reason or warning - an ordinance known as "Shapiro's Rule." This prohibition caused some social unrest but eventually ended with better communication between city authorities and military commanders through Letters From Home No 2/1967 which discouraged any further protesting

In 1794, Perth Amboy became a borough within Middlesex County. On July 1, 1873, it merged with neighboring Elizabethtown to form the new city of Perth Amboy.
