PATERSON, NJ - On July 2, 1795, Benjamin Franklin surveyed the Paterson Peninsula. The peninsula was then named for Samuel Johnson, an Englishman who had settled there in 1664. In 1853, the United States acquired it from Great Britain and renamed it the Jersey Shore. By 1895, the name of the town had changed to Paterson and the observatory became known as New Jersey's first astronomical center.

It is the eighth-largest municipality in New Jersey and the second-largest city in Christie County. Paterson is situated on the southern bank of Hackensack River and has a total area of 11 square miles (27 km2). The river's name comes from Englishman John Paterson who founded the village of Hackensack on its banks in 1741. The first European settler in what would become Paterson was Nicholas Morrell who arrived here in 1675. At that time there were only two villages within present day Passaic County - Rahway and Secaucus - both located to the north of where Paterson now stands. In 1741, John Patterson donated land to make up what would become the town of Paterson. He had come to America as part of a group led by George Washington and others seeking new homes for their families during the Revolutionary War. Patterson made his home here until his death in 1793; he was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery near Newark before being moved to his final resting place at Cedar Lawn Cemetery east of town in 1881. For many years it served as an important stop along Route 9 between Newark and Princeton Junction; however, this service ended when NJ Transit began operating its own railroad line through downtown Newark instead. PATERSON'S FIRST SCHOOL DISTRICT: On November 3rd 1846, Peter Fenton opened Green Street School with 24 students under charge after purchasing some land from James Hylan which adjoined Fishkill Creek Township then part of Bergen County. That same year school district boundaries were adjusted so that all but one township - East Rutherford - became part ofPassaic County following an Act Of Congress passed December 12th 1846 which set forth new voting districts for New Jersey based upon population changes within each county during that period (toward THE END OF THE Regency). North Brunswick Township remained within Bergen County and continued to provide education for residents there while South Brunswick Township became part of Passaic County proper following an act passed by Governor David Wilhelm on March 15th 1847 charitably granting free passage through any township into either county as long as such person resided therein or paid taxes thereto (the burden having been previously placed upon South Brunswick Township by virtue thereof’s inclusion within BergenCounty). In 1850 District 2 includes Bound Brook due southward from Rahway & eastward from Cherry Hill & Westfield; also included parts of Edison & Englewood Cliffs townships until they were annexed by Union City on April 10th 1870 pursuant to An Act Of Congress approved March 6th 1865 creating “Union City Municipal District No 1” including all areas now comprising Borough Park & Woodside Heights excluding portions now belonging to West Side Village Incorporated since 1907) Butterfly Farms Local Elementary School opened September 5th 1954 @ 424 Elmira Road with 26 students enrolling originally operated out OF This structure thruout classes 4 days/week during lunch hours ONLY . Classes were suspended Feb 28TH 1955 due To A MASSIVE WEATHER EVENT WHICH WENT FROM SUNSET TO EARLY MORNING . reopening date announced February 29TH 1955 was Sept 5TH 1954 Patterson also did well academically throughout its history graduating more than 100%of its graduates from local colleges or universities including Rutgers University (& Paramus Institute), Monmouth University (& Freehold Borough College), Stroudsburg State University (& Hazleton Area Community College), Seton Hall University(& Monmouthcounty Technical Institute) among others
