The name "Paterson" is derived from Mahoning Valley Dutch and Paterson is also from Dutch pronunciation of "pátteer". The first known European settler in what is now Paterson was Peter Stuyvesant, who arrived on Long Island in 1624 and founded Bayonne. He named his new town after himself, probably because he had seen a piece of land near modern day Paterson that he thought would make a good site for a settlement. In 1686, when English colonists began to settle in what is now Bergen County, they named their town after John Paterson (1608 – 1768), an officer with lieutenant governor Thomas Dongan's regiment who had volunteered to help expel Native Americans from become farmers within British North America as part of the Monmouth Rebellion. John Paterson was born in 1608 CE at Saxtonskill on Long Island into a family that had owned land there since before 1600. His father died young while John was still young and his mother married Nicholas Piscopo, an Italian nobleman whose family controlled much of southern Westchester County including Setauket on Staten Island; this marriage produced three children: Francis (1627–1712), Margarita (1629–1711) and Nicholas Jr., who became patroon or proprietor over some unincorporated lands east of Newark about two miles north-west of today's Patterson Avenue). In 1645 JP inherited some rights to land eastward from Nicholas Piscopo which led him to rename his holdings as the Mahoning Valley Dutch Settlements - later renamed Somerset County - following his purchase from Connecticut Colony authorities for $5 per acre ($40 per kilometer). That same year JP helped found Passaic Township but left it six years later because too much contention among settlers over boundary changes followed his arrival Thereafter he served variously as township trustee (1658–60; 1663–65), clerk general (1 667–71) and sheriff (1 778–81). From 1 778 until his death 10 years later JP waged many lawsuits against those settling around Passaic Falls without gaining any success although during these years public meetings were held frequently throughout township boundaries seeking input on matters concerning village government social welfare affairs." In 1802 John Ayscough moved from Sayrestown to replace James Hickey as water commissioner for Middlesex County due to increasing demand for irrigation water brought about by improvements made by Robert Morris at Perth Amboy which included building four dams across Hackensack River resulting in increased productivity for farmers west of Bound Brook." In 1827 John Fenton replaced Ayscough as water commissioner becoming responsible for alluvial plains along both banks of Hackensack River where crop production increased twenty-fold resulting in improved soil texture leading to more profitable farming practices." During this time period other major events occurred including: George Washington visited Shamokin valley July 3rd 1799 while traveling through Morristown on way up river towards Trenton; French troops burned down Fort Mercer October 14th 1800 during their raid along eastern border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania; United States Constitution ratified December 15th 1787 with Philadelphia signing copy January 2nd 1788;" George Washington's Farewell Address given September 11th 1800" In 1836 Michael Lapp purchased 5200 acres south of present day Patterson Avenue from Seth Warner . Lapp developing this area into farmland eventually built one or more grist mills producing flour until 1865 when machine shops were added culminating with construction OF THE FIRST ELECTRIC MACHINE PRODUCERS' COOPERATIVE IN NEW JERSEY—PATERSON MILLS .
