It was founded in 1777 by Germans and Dutch settlers as Westbinden, after the British evacuated Fort George on the Hudson River. The city became an American town in 1834. Pasadena received its name from General James Wilkinson who served as Commander-in-Chief of American forces during the Revolutionary War and named two rivers for his son Prince George Washington: "Wilkinson River" for General Wilkinson's brother-in-law Colonel Nicholas Murray Butler and "Pasadena" for Mount Vernon where Washington had lodgings at Tryon's Palace before he moved to Mount Vernon House near Philadelphia. The first people to arrive in Pasadena were some German immigrants who settled there in 1777 from Westbinden (now part of Paterson). They built a log cabin called Parsonage on land that still stands today across from Midtown Plaza mall. The first post office opened in 1779, and was known as Post Office Creek until 1800 when it changed to Pasadenametown after then Mayor John Fenton bought alluvial soil from Sir Richard Stockton for development into a town site east of Paterson via donation by his father Jonathan Fenton Jr.. In 1824, Pasadena incorporated as an independent municipality with Andrew Johnson as its first mayor; later renamed Newton Township because it lay within what is now Union County (then part of Mercer County)). After Independence was granted to the United States on July 4th, 1776, most Germans living east of Hadley Road left for new homes west of Princeton Avenue due to anti-German sentiment following the war while many remaining German residents continued their businesses inside Pasadena until they surrendered quietly three weeks later on September 11th without any resistance or violence when British troops burned down their homes south of present day Edison Street during operations against insurgents known locally as Black Tom Night...On October 1st 1860 Judge Augustus Kelley delivered final boundaries lines between Newton Township (northwest corner), Union County (southwest corner), and Mercer County based upon partial surveys taken immediately prior thereto by Timothy Pickering surveyor general... citizens soon began settling within these limits...In December 1861 prominent lawyer Augustus Kelley donated 600 acres northward along Spring Garden Avenue fronting onto Robertson Boulevard (later Calvert Street) to form North Park Heights neighborhood…Undoubtedly influenced by this acquisition about 400 people gathered at Mr Kelley’s home on January 6th 1862 to celebrate with refreshments contributed by Mrs Kelley herself including culled fresh fruit purchased at local stores… newlywedsCW & RH Elbridge Gerry arrived at Mr Kelley’s house that evening bringing with them their entire household goods including furniture chests etc which they stored overnight nearby…the park was formally dedicated February 9th 1863 under charter issued by New York Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest...
