Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Passaic were Dutch farmers and traders who arrived in 1676. They named their new settlement "Beekmanstown", after Johannes Beekman, one of the original proprietors of the now-defunct East India Company. In 1714, John Moore and his family founded Moorestown on the east bank of the Passaic River. The following year, George Washington established a military post at Fordham Ferry across from what is now White Plains to protect against Indian attacks on the frontier settlements in central New Jersey. In 1732, George Clinton moved his headquarters from Morristown to what is now Union Township to facilitate economic development along with other early settlers such as Samuel de Champlain and Nicholas Bourke Carleton. In 1819, during the American Civil War, General Robert Ephraim Cooke's force destroyed Fort Lee after its garrison surrendered without surrendering their cannons or ammunition. On September 11th 1861, Ulysses S. Grant's army burned down a section of Verrazano Bridge overpassing Passaic Creek following an engagement with Confederate forces under General Richard Ewell that resulted in two men dead and five wounded on both sides; this event became known as "the burn". A few years later (1865), Congress approved legislation authorizing incorporation as a borough by Act No., 6 Contey 9; however because no citizens had applied for incorporation yet and no election was held to approve it due to lack of political support within the community%, it passed intooperative status until February 3rd 1870 when it was reauthorized byAct No., 21 Contey 5 with amended boundaries which included portions of West Paterson Township including Northold Park Reservoir which lay within what are now Asbury Park Borough limits). Finally on October 15th 1890 pursuant to an act entitled An Act giving effect thereto all that had been done since February 3rd 1870 inclusive relative to said organization etc.;Passaic Borough Was Organized By Authority Of The Stateof NewJersey From Its Deficit And On That Date November 1st 1890 Pertaining To Its Organization The Mayor & Council Were Appointed By Misdelivered Records; At Which Time James Fenton Was Elected Chairman Of Council After Being Recommended To Succeed By His Friend & Colleague Hiram Wickercombe Who Had Been Chosen By The Mayor To Help Correct Some Errors In Our Records Which Had crept Into Our Publications During The long dormant period Before This Prodigal Son Came Home We Have Suffered Enough From His Immorality & Corruption You Will Bear With Us As We Go Forward Under Your guidance We Are Counting On You
