That same year saw the opening of the Erie Canal which increased trade through Passaic and other communities along its route; this made Passaic one of the most important communities along its path. On November 9th, 1838 – just two years after being incorporated as an Borough – Passaic annexed Rahway Township (then called Rahway), creating what would be known as the largest municipality east of Hudson River until Brooklyn was created in 1898. The area that would become Passaic was originally known as "Netherlands Town" because it lay within territory controlled by the Dutch Republic at that time (the Netherlands proper extended only up to Utrecht). When English settlers began moving into rural areas south of Trenton during the American Revolution, they named their new community after their old Netherlands friend Sir George Washington (whose occupation at this time included surveying land grants). After years of development work led by successive mayors–including John Fenton (1853-58), James Whelan (1859-65), Hosea Butterfield (1866-68), Robert Neilson Foster (1869-72), Lewis Cass (1873-77) and Abraham Lincoln Coolidge (1911-13)—Pasajic emerged as one of New York City's most important commercial thoroughfares during its early 19th century heyday under both Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and later Mayor William Gaynor. 2

The Passaic Valley was a natural area in New Jersey that drained into the Hackensack River. The valley was named for the pass through which the river flowed. In 1764, John Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret purchased of what is now Monmouth County from the Native Americans. The area became part of English Monmouth County in 1681. In 1772, George Washington and his forces attacked Fort Lee on Long Island while under cover of darkness to gain passage up the Hudson River to Manhattan. They were successful and forced the British to withdraw from New York City. In 1800, a bridge was built over the Hackensack River at Passaic as part of an effort to connect New York City with Newark Castle on the opposite side ofriver. The bridge failed after only three months due to flooding. In 1814, General James Witherspoon surrendered at Saratoga Springs before retreating acrossthe Hudson River back to New York City. His army had lost nearly half its supplies in pursuit of Witherspoon acrossNew England and Midwestern United States
