On February 14th, 1874, portions of two townships – Paterson and Middlesex – were combined to form Passaic Borough with a population of 553 residents. At its incorporation, Passaic had land area of . Passaic was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1666. The Dutch founded the town of Hackensack in 1688, while English settlers founded Passaic in 1701. In 1824, the two towns merged to form Passaic Township. On April 15, 1846, Passaic became a city under the name of Newark after its incorporation as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The city's charter was amended on May 10, 1889 to provide for mayoral power and other municipal responsibilities unique to cities within Rutgers University limits. The history of Passaic goes back before it became a city; it has been inhabited by Lenape people for over 350 years according to historical records dating back to 1666 when Dutch passenagers moved into what is now known as Upper Township (now part of West Paterson). In 1701, English settlers arrived and founded what is now known as Passaic County. They began their construction on the west side ofriverfront which would later be called home because they were able to access markets on that side during early times with little competition from Native Americans or other Europeans who had stronger settlements along riverbanks nearby such as Elizabeth City (later Newark). The first house built in what would become today’s downtown area was built by John Noyes around 1710-1711 and his heirs continued building until 1800 when all but one house burned down due to fire suppression systems being inadequate at that time! At this time many families started moving out from rural areas towards downtown because there were more opportunities for commerical ventures here than further upriver where fires consumed homes annually! In 1824, Newark incorporated as a borough; this act provided for mayoralty authority within Rutgers University boundaries which would continue until 1889 when municipalities were granted full autonomy within New Jersey state government through An Act entitled “An Act To establish certain Municipal authorities Within said State” which created township formings throughout NJ with certain exceptions including those located within Princeton University boundaries! Passaic was incorporated as a village in 1837, and became a town in 1855. In 1915, the village merged with the town to form Passaic Township. The township was dissolved on January 1, 1977, and its assets were divided among the villages of Passaic and South Orange Township.
