Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,481 at the 2010 census. Passaic is located on the north bank of the Hackensack River, west of Newark and east of Paterson. The name "Pasquico" is derived from the Lenape word "pasqua," meaning "riverbank." The first mention ofpassaic comes from a deed by Nicholas de Montresor to Sir John Bradshaw in 1294. In 1715, James Boswell recorded that 'the people of passaic are very diligent in their trade'. In 1821, land grants were given to thirteen settlers: four brothers - Timothy Dolan (1810-1878), Isaac Green (1796-1848), Daniel Fitzpatrick (1799-1864) and Jeremiah Fenton (1800-1885). These grantees formed the basis for what would become Passaic Township. At this time, there were no villages or towns within present-day Passaic Township; all citizens lived on farmssteads scattered throughout its borders. In 1834, when George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States and Moses Carey was made Governor of New Jersey, passesac opened up under his supervision which had been closed by then because it lay within corporate boundaries of Paterson. On July 10th 1835 Andrew Johnson signed a bill into law providing for township organization with village form being adopted two years later on December 1st 1850 by an act entitled “An Act to organize and amend sections 2 and 3 of said section 516” This act created four villages within present day Passaic Township: West Orange Village (northwest corner of First Street & Third Avenue), East Orange Village (southwest corner of Second Street & Fourth Avenue), Paramus Village(east side off State Highway 7 just south of Route 23)and North Bergen Townshend(northwest corner offHighway 287 between Maple Avenue & Raymond Boulevard). The villages were incorporated as municipalities in 1906 with Borough status granted to them one year later on November 15th 1907 pursuant to an act entitled “An Act Relative To Municipal Organization And Powers Of The Borough Officers thereof” By this act it was determined that each municipality must have its own police department with responsibilities including fire protection, zoning regulation and street cleaning while still remaining partof the Borough but having full voting rights therein as well as exclusive use of public arterial highways passing through their boundaries

Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Borough was created on December 14, 1834 from portions of Rahway and East Orange. The borough has since been enlarged several times with the addition of Plumsted Township (1937), Ridgefield Township (1948), and South Brunswick Township (1993). In 2007, portions of Saddle Brook Township were transferred to Passaic as well. The first settler in what is now Passaic was Nicholas Pappas who arrived in 1755 from Italy. He founded a small farm near where he lived until his death in 1786. His grandson John Pappas started a sawmill on the Millstream River in 1824 which continues to operate today as Pappas Mills Incorporated. After John's death in 1830 his widow married Thomas D'Augella who ran the mill for many years until it closed for economic reasons around 1875; however, some remnants of that early mill still remain today including a water wheel located within close proximity to Route 73 interchange off Route 78 outside of town limits. In 1835, two brothers by the name of Smith opened up a store at 5th and Market Streets called "Netherlands". They continued to do business there until their shop burned down in 1876 during an urban riots that followed the American Civil War; this led to increased development along Market Street northward towards Princeton Avenue which soon became known as Broadway/Newark Avenue downtown with its bright red brick buildings typical of those days due to their location just south of Chambers Street between First National Bank and Second National Bank buildings which remain extant today as part of Broadwalk Center Mall complex across from Trenton Memorial Hall historical landmark). During this time period various other businesses such as dry goods stores and groceries moved into these same areas - one example being Fidelity Bancorp which occupied what is now Waterfront Park east of Broadway/Newark Avenue downtown during this time period - contributing significantly to growth along that stretch northward over time including numerous high-rise apartment structures built during this era such as Prudential Insurance Company building located on Broadwalk Center Mall complex across from Trenton Memorial Hall significant redevelopment project completed & open since early 2014 consisting primarily residential units featuring river view balconies & ocean views also encompassing office space occupying adjacent parking garage providing excellent outdoor skyline view) In 1951, when James Eads became Mayor after serving two terms as Freeholder [elected officials responsible for carrying out ordinances passed by City Council] he recommended that the Borough make efforts towards becoming connected with Newark Liberty International Airport although at that point no formal action had been taken nor did any plans exist concerning airport developments or infrastructure provisioning within or neighboring municipalities despite Newark having an active commercial aviation sector totaling more than 100 million passengers annually [at that time]].
