Passaic, New Jersey is a small town in the American state of New Jersey. The town is located in the northwest corner of the state and is bordered by Union County to the east, Passaic County to the north, Bergen County to the west and Mercer County to the south. As of 2010, Passaic had a population of 43,811. The name "Passaic" comes from two Irish words –PASSi-ach (place where cows were milked) and cahir (a stream). The first European settlers in Passaic were French Huguenots who arrived in 1698. They named their new community "Rochefort". On November 15th, 1795, as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolutionary War, America gained control over all of northern Jersey except for some areas around Hackensack which still belonged to Great Britain. In 1814-15, during Andrew Jackson's presidency as president of the United States, he ordered General John Sutter to build a bridge across Bear Creek on his farm near present-day Eastvale. The bridge was completed in 1818 but was destroyed by a storm that swept through Newark on October 25th that year. In 1846 when section 9 Of Township 11 North was established within sections 8 & 9 Of School District 2North it became known as 'Old West Side'. In 1901 it became section 6 Of Township 11 North again becoming known as 'New West Side'. Due to its position at one end of Central Park it has been called “the central borough” or simply “Pasajic” throughout its history In 1910 Governor James Kugler appointed commissioners to investigate possible consolidation with Middlesex due to competition from other townships in Middlesex County for services from local municipalities such as Edison Junction and Patersonville . After five months no decisions were made about consolidating with Middlesex . On December 3rd 1911 acting Commissioner David Bamber announced plans for consolidation with Essex but this plan also failed after strong opposition from residents who felt they would lose their jobs and homes . Finally on April 1st 1912 Mayor Abram Jaffe approved a resolution proposing incorporation into Essex Community College District No 2 pursuant thereto immediately following enactment by Act No 76of 1912 calling for an investigation into whether such action might be advisable under existing law providing for establishment thereof More than fifty years later on September 30th 2006 PASSAIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE DIVISION ADOPTED A RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH A NEW SCHOOL DISTRICT IN PASSICOON COUNTY CALLED PASSAIC CITY STUDENTS INCIDENTAL TO THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL INTO PASSAIC COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT NO 2 WOULD BE CHARTERED TO PROVIDE EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS FROM PKD II THROUGH PKD IV INCLUDING ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS LOCATED IN THAT DISTRICT WHILE ALSO ASSISTING THE ESCORT PROGRAM FOR HOME ENGLISH MAJORITIES COMPRISING SOME OF THE STRONGEST DEMANDERS FOR EDUCATION AS WELL AS OTHER SERVICES NOT CONTAINED IN THE MUNICIPAL SCHOOL DISTRIBUTIONS NOW REPRESENTED BY ESSEX CITY STUDENTS INCIDENTAL TO TRANSFORMATION

Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 22,471. It is bordered by Union Township to the north and east; Paterson to the south and west; and Middletown to the northwest. The Passaic River forms its eastern border. The first Europeans to visit what is now Passaic were French traders in 1611 who named it "Le Vieux-Bouquet", after a small stream that crossed their path near their trading post on the Hackensack River. The first Dutch settlers arrived in 1624, followed by English colonists in 1664. In 1813, New Netherland became part of the United States of America and Passaic became a part of Bergen County with its own government and courts. In 1834, Passaic was incorporated as a borough under New Jersey law. In 1835, an act was passed providing for township form of government for all but two townships in Bergen County which remained rural until 1860 when they were brought into city form with some exceptions including Passaic where all vestiges of agriculture were eliminated except for limited access to water from underground wells tillage continued until after World War II when it was replaced by suburban development In 1916–17 there was a race riots at Madison Square Garden following an interruption during one game between the American Football League's Brooklyn Dodgers and National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings which had been held at Yankee Stadium on Long Island City's West Side while Giants Stadium (now MetLife Stadium) was being built across town on Randallstown Road. Three people died as a result: James Jaffree (a local black man), Harry Stephens (a white man employed as referee) and Johnnie Cochran (born white, son of colored father). Two days later four men dressed like rioters successfully got into Madison Square Garden through one door leading from outside to inside where they looted several tables before being discovered by security guards who drove them away with tear gas canisters
