The name was given to the community by General John Burgoyne in 1777 as part of his campaign to secure passage for the British army through the area during their war with France. The current form of Passaic was established on March 14, 1814 when portions of Bergen and Passaic counties were added to create what is now New Jersey. The first Europeans to visit this area were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624 and1627 respectively. At that time there was no river or bay connecting Newark Bay with the mainland and land here was mostly swampy and forested. It wasn’t until 1664 that an Englishman named William Penn arrived at Perth Amboy on Long Island (now Atlantic City) and identified this region as being rich in natural resources which he would later exploit. In order for Penn to find these resources he needed help from someone so he appointed George Washington as commander-in-chief of all American forces in North America and sent him here to explore what lay beyond Philadelphia proper. On July 1st, 1777, General John Burgoyne sailed his Britannic ship "Hudson" upriver from Saybrook Point across Hackensack River into what is nowNJ at a point just east of today's town limits called Fort Lee because Advance Guard troops under British Major Robert Livingston manned it during the Monmouth Rebellion against King George III’s rule in 1776). After disembarking his troops at Saybrook Point where they erected some rudimentary buildings back then (still standing), Burgoyne moved downriver about three miles (5 km) establishing two small villages – White Plains north of today's Borough Hall Annexe/Old Bridge Road/First Street/East Side Highway garage complex; and East Windsor Village south of today's Borough Hall Annexe/Old Bridge Road/Third Street between First Avenue South & Second Avenue North). He also built a small fortuitous spot on which he called West Brunswick Landing on September 12th – one day after news reached him that General Howe had evacuated Princeton due to French forces advancing upstream towards Trenton! 2 days later following orders from General Howe himself Admiral Howe arrived off Trenton with 2 fleets totaling 54 ships carrying artillery fire directly onto Fort Mercer whereupon Commodore Nicholas Vitus led an Anglo Hessian detachment overland toward Princeton only to be repulsed at sight by 3 regiments commanded by Colonel Andros Townsend who soon recaptured Trenton without any loss! This event forever changed western New Jersey history such as whether or not we should have followed England instead of France! Burgoyne decided then and there that if Pennsylvania could do it so could NJ so he ordered Captain James Hewes USN captain commanding 5 companies HMS Albion along side Lieutenant governor Freeman Morris commanding militia company founded October 15th 1777 aboard USS Pembroke under Captains Joseph Cook USN Commodore Nicholas Vitus signalled Majerus vander Schaepenburgh Baron de la Roche commanding 1000 men 80 cannons 4 piccolos fowling pieces 8 swivel guns mounted upon carriages drawn by 2 hounds leaded horses each team pulling a cart containing ammunition for each gun - plus baggage - this large force march through open country northeastward past present day Vineland into Delaware before turning northwestward near present day Bordentown reaching Wilmington Feb 25th 1778 after 10 days march leading them 400 miles nonstop including crossing bothutch Schuylkill River going over bridges stated above across said river described below recreating same route using road & bridge construction methods patented prior thereto wherin old Pemberton Mill still stands). Passaic is a township in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,851 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous of the five municipalities in Passaic County and one of its most populous townships. The name originated from the Susquehanna River. The township was formed on February 12, 1778, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature based on land taken from Middlesex Township by an earlier act. The new township was named for Major General John Sullivan's forces who had fought against British forces during the American Revolution. The first town meeting in Passaic took place on April 25, 1779. George Washington was elected mayor and Jameson Post served as clerk; all three men were re-elected to their positions in 1780 and 1781. On March 10, 1814, a large fire destroyed much of what is now downtown Passaic and some sections of Prospect Park; however no damage was done to any other buildings within the limits of the present townsquare. On July 14th 1824 two members of Congress rode into town while attending a state funeral procession for Ulysses S Grant and accidentally left their horses inside First Baptist Church where they remained until being returned to sender that night without having ridden any further than Fort Lee when they realized their mistake - this event is also commonly known as "the first public transportation in America". On December 5th 1850 a tornado struck downtown Passaic destroying many buildings including First Baptist Church which remains standing today as one of only a few remaining examples of such an infamous natural disaster in North America that did not result in fatalities or injuries (the majority being caused by fires). A similar tornado hit Hackensack on October 9th 1896 leaving four buildings destroyed with total casualties unknown but thought to have been several dozen people due to hysteria ensuing from both events. In 1926 Main Street between Broadwalk Avenue & White Plains Road became straightened out making it more like modern day US highways - still visible can be seen remnants from prior bridges overpassing older roads which crossed under Main Street just north/west of where it now meets Whitespoken Avenue
The Passaic Valley was one of the early areas in New Jersey that became heavily populated with British colonists during the 17th century. The valley was named after the pass, or mountain range, that separates it from what is now Pennsylvania. The first English settlements were founded in the area around 1664 by Sir George Carteret and his brother-in-law Samuel de Champlain. In 1714, James Forbes Captured a large French fleet off the coast of Cape May County and sailed it into Passaic Bay for sale to the British Crown. The following year, John Dobbs erected a stockade on Lower Township's high ground to prevent French forces from landing at North Brunswick. By 1720, there were over 50 English settlements in the Passaic Valley alone. By 1740, there were 1,500 English settlers living in Passaic County and 2,000 Indians residing within its boundaries. In 1776, as part of an effort by General George Washington to quash any possible rebellion against American rule throughout New Jersey while he engaged in battle against Howe at Trenton (New Jersey), Patriots sympathized with France and helped transport arms and munitions downriver to support their cause in Paris. After America's victory at Yorktown (1781), sections of the Dutch community along the Delaware River began organizing for resistance against American rule; these patriots called themselves "The Wild Men." When word arrived of America's defeat at Saratoga (1804), many members of this group turned traitor and joined Howe. But others continued to fight until 1814 when all but three hundred remaining Dutch Loyalists surrendered unconditionally to General Andrew Jackson's army at Blakely Heights outside Philadelphia. Following World War II, many Americans who had grown up living in New Jersey returned home; among these returnees was Bob Smith Sr., who had been born and raised near Englewood Cliffs inside Bergen County outside Paterson. He started a small business manufacturing furnaces before becoming a leading figure in Democratic politics throughout most of central New Jersey through much of the 1970s before retiring stage left after being elected Mayor of Camden City Hall in 1999).
