Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,876 at the 2010 Census. Passaic is located on the southern border of the county and bordered by Paterson to the east, Uniondale to the north and west, and Plainfield to the south. The area that would become Passaic was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1640 as part of Bergen Township. In 1814, it became a separate township from Middlesex County. On March 14, 1868, it merged with both Middlesex andPassaic Counties to form Passaic County. The name "Passaic" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "passing through." In 1795, when section 7 of Township 12 North in Bergen Township was annexed into Passaic County for land taken up for public school purposes (the School District of Passaic had been organized earlier that year), one-third of that land consisted of present-day Borough Park. As early as 1796 two surveys were made on section 6 (northwest corner of Section 9) within what became Borough Park; these showed 104 acres (39 hectares) in all including lots which had not yet been patented or sold but lay waste because no one wanted them. This suggests that some people may have bought or received grants in lieu of patentation for their holdings before they actually developed them). It should be noted that this survey did not take into account what would become Paramus – then known as West Orange – which was founded adjacent to what is now Borough Park only a few years later. According to Oneida Indian Nation history scholar David Hackett Fischer: “This early development does not reflect well on either party involved: [the Dutch] acquired some valuable real estate but also lost out on future development opportunities; [the Native Americans] gained access to new water sources and transportation routes” In 1827 there were several parcels (15 acres each) patented for farming along State Rte 4 near today's Rahway amnion junction; this area would come to be known as Rahway Heights after its developer named Samuel Rahway purchased some property there in 1830 From here he began developing sections northwestward along Rte 4 until finally reaching his final destination at Middletown Lakeshore where he built a home still standing today called 'The White House' This site served as headquarters for Jepson Paper Company while its plant grew up around it becoming one of largest paper manufacturers in America until World War II When Jepson moved production overseas another large paper manufacturer took over until eventually closing down too leaving behind a major pollution problem There are several theories about how this happened but most agree that due to huge emissions generated during manufacturing processes hundreds if not thousands of toxins were created which caused serious health problems throughout town including cancer rates rising significantly among local residents For many years attempts were made by successive administrations both federal and state level to clean up these facilities however without any success poison levels continue remaining high even after many remedial measures have been put into place Finally cleanup efforts got underway under Governor McGraw following pressure from environmental organizations 60+ miles away who provided fundingAnd lastly we are seeing positive results with current programs being designed To address these issues As you can see much has changed since those days including EMS being brought back into service thanks largely to donations from nearby communities like Rahway

In 1822 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill in what is now East Rutherford after purchasing land southwest of Newark from Baron de Weiler for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ ). After years of struggles to get financing for construction he started production in 1827; by 1830s production had reached 1 million pounds (500 metric tons) a year. In 1836 Production moved to larger mills at Iselin Mills which became fully automated by 1948 when all operations were transferred to Rahway Mills near Bridgewater Antrim Township NJ In 1886 sawmill owner James Kapp sold mill rights to Harvey Vail who built Vail Dam which impounded the river so that power could be exported across the river from Orange Avenue Bridge overpassing Trenton Waterfront through Vail Dam turning turbines creating spinning water wheels powering farm machinery until 1992 when dam ceased operation due to high water levels
