Passaic is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 30,971 as of the 2010 census. Passaic is located on the Hackensack River and is part of the New York metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore what is now Passaic were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and Christopher Columbus in 1492. The name "Pasquale" (meaning "place where wine does well") was given to the village by Pietro Andrea D'Elia in 1615 for his vineyard near present-day Harrisonburg. In 1708, George Washington passed through this area on his way from Princeton to Mount Vernon; he noted that it looked like an excellent place for a military post because of its strategic location within easy reach of two major rivers. In 1814, when the United States acquired land east of Newark Bay from Great Britain, President James K. Polk designated part of what would become Passaic as Rutgers University's College Park Campus to house American students attending British universities abroad. Rutgers appropriated $10,000 from local landowners to build a college there and named it after George Washington; classes began on September 8, 1824. The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a borough in 1834 but this petition was denied because they did not have enough property tax receipts to support an independent government entity. On October 21, 1835–the day following General Joshua Greene's victory over General Robert Ewing at Monmouth Court House–the town annexed into Bergen Township with 539 residents A new school building was completed in 1865 and serve as both the School District office and municipal hall until 1922 when Borough Hall became official municipal building The first store on Main Street opened in 1863 In 1895 Samuel Mathers started importing grapes from Spain so he could sell them fresh here On July 10th 1905 Edison established electric lighting throughout the whole township including our old Dutch barn which we still use today

Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 22,706 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Passaic were two Dutchmen, Hendrick van den Bergh and Abraham Ortelius, who charted the area in 1624 as part of their journey from New Netherland to explore North America. In 1714, Colonel John Thornton erected a fort on the Hackensack River (present-day Van Valkenburg Creek), which served as an outpost for British forces opposing American independence during the Revolutionary War. In 1812, George Washington leased land along the Hackensack River from Johan de la Garde for $1 per year; this provided access to a source of water that would later be used by both federal troops and settlers. On July 11, 1814, Ulysses S. Grant relieved General Philip Kearny of command of Union forces stationed in Westchester County and moved them into Passaic County after Kearny's failed attempt to retake Trenton from Princetonshire militiamen under Colonel Robert Morris. In 1835, when it became clear that Westchester County would not become fully independent until 1861 due to its location within the newly formed New York State government following the Talbot Purchase Treaty between Great Britain and America, President Andrew Johnson ordered Captain Fenton Keyes to survey all of New Jersey east of Cherry Hill so that plans could be made for a railroad linking Philadelphia with Morristown through Passaic County. The first sod was cut on March 2nd., 1836 and construction started soon afterwards only pause due to financial constraints caused by American inflation at that time. Passaic, New Jersey is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 34,909. The name for the town was taken from Passaic River and means "passage through." The first permanent European settlement in what is now Passaic Township was made by Capt. John Stevens on July 8, 1764 as part of his survey of the township. The first settler to be named after the river was Nicholas Fenton who purchased land at what is now Clifton Avenue and Park Place from Anthony Carbonell in 1768. In 1814, James Kapp purchased 2.,373 acres (1 km²) of land including today's Borough limits along with 3 other townships for $2 per acre ($40 total). This purchase included what are now Garden City Mall and South Millville Township. On November 1st 1814, Kapp renamed his new community "Passaic". The original growth of the township center can be traced back to when a small group of farmers founded a Presbyterian church on Fort Lee Road northwest of present-day North Plainfield Township on October 20th 1837 which would later become known as First Presbyterian Church (now Bethpage Presbyterian Church). In 1850, four more farms were donated by Reverend Wm Halsey to form Fort Lee Cemetery which served as their meeting place until 1921 when it moved to its current location across Route 9 south of town. With this growth came also an increase in taxable property value and helped support local schools until about 1975 when increases in pupil enrollment caused school budgets to outpace inflationary forces and tuition hikes resulting in budget cuts that led to declining enrollment over time. According to demographers at Rutgers University School of Social Work who studied census data from 2000-2007 there has been an increase in household incomes within city limits but no corresponding decrease or expansion among rural areas since then; this suggests that while there may have been some increased access to education within city limits due increasing prosperity within those boundaries overall there has not been corresponding improvement for poorer residents therefore contributing towards gentrification processes taking place outside these boundaries
