Passaic, New Jersey is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 33,691 as of the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in Passaic County after Paterson and it is also the most populous city in the state of New Jersey. The City of Paterson was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664. The name "Passaic" comes from Pascua ( Latin for "Hawksbill") because so many local waterfowl are found thereabouts. According to one source, the first settler in what is now Passaic County was Samuel de Montresor who arrived here on horseback from Newark on November 10th, 1664. Montresor's predecessor had landed at Hackensack on October 14th, 1624. In 1714 George Washington passed through this area while campaigning against Quebec during his campaign for president and he called it "the Snowsy Valley". In 1768 John Woolsey developed a mill site here which became known as Woolseyville after him and his son-in-law Valentine Slocum built a dam across the Hackensack River to power their millrace that still functions today. In 1837 James McGowan bought Rancho Alamitos from José Castro for $10,000 and began developing it into what would become Passaic Township which he named after himself – Peterstown (Irish: An Phoblacht). The township became an incorporated municipality on February 18th, 1872 according to Act No. 5 of March 11th of that year which granted municipal status to certain townships within Bergen County including those within Passaic Township – making it one of only two municipalities in NJ without such status at that time (the other being Uniontown). Passaic has long been considered an agricultural center with crops like potatoes and wheat grown throughout its entirety; however recent years have seen significant development around nightlife and professional services such as law enforcement and health care providers located near or inside transit stations make this borough a more popular place to live today than ever before thanks largely to its infrastructure developments dating back over 100 years! As residential communities continue grow along I-95 corridor they will increasingly need police officers/firefighters/etc stationed throughout their borders just like any other metropolitan area enjoying rapid growth... countless businesses have cropped up near train station locations over these past few decades ready to take advantage of increased commuter traffic volume - be sure you keep an eye out when walking around town as some areas may look promising but unfortunately can quickly fill with additional commercial development if not managed well!

By 1800, there were about 100 people living here. One of the first businesses open in Passaic was a grocery store called "The Grapes" on Clinton Street near what is now Union Avenue. In 1813, a group of men led by Isaac Brock purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land north of where present-day Passaic stands for $1 per acre ($27 at today's prices). This became known as Brock's Farm and began to be used for farming and grazing animals until it was combined with part of Madison Township to form Rahway Township on March 14, 1825. The first post office opened in Rahway on November 5th, 1826. In 1830, one David Hackett built a sawmill along what is now Mill Road near what are now South Orange Avenue and West Egginton Avenue.hackett also founded Hackett & Houlton Co., grain merchants that operated out of their shop from 1830 to 1865 when they moved to Edisonville PA
