The first guns in Passaic were pistols and rifles. The area was originally part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, and early settlers carried Firearms Licensees which allowed them to carry firearms without getting a license from the government. Pistol manufacturers such as White & Johnson started up in Passaic in the early 18th century. In 1795, the state of New Jersey passed a law that made it illegal to manufacture or possess any rifle or revolver with barrels less than eighteen inches long. This law led to a proliferation of pistols in Passaic because there was no legal way for citizens to own firearms longer than eighteen inches. By 1812, most pistol manufacturers had moved out ofPassaic due to new regulations enacted by the state legislature. Rifle production continued until about 1840 when it also stopped completely due to prohibition laws introduced by New Jersey governor James Ketchum.
Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 25,521. The name "Passaic" is derived from an Old Dutch word meaning "bridge over the river." In 1708, Nicholas Lower and his brother-in-law Samuel Gerry built a bridge over the Hudson River at what is now called First Street in Passaic. George Washington crossed that bridge on October 20th, 1780. The first European to settle in Passaic were two families from Newark who arrived in 1664. They named their community after Sir James Clarke of Hackensack (died 1668), one of the proprietors of Ratcliffe House (now part of East Orange). Clark's estate lay within what is now West Paterson and he may have built some early houses there too. By 1700, when Sitchenour moved to Township 10 north in Bergen County, there were around twenty families living in Passaic with four or five stores and a few hundred acres (18 hectares) of land cornage (manor). In 1804 Alexander Wilson founded the village of Perth Amboy onshore from present day Hoboken; Perth Amboy served as Wilson's major market town for many years before being incorporated as a separate municipality in 1856. At this time much of what makes up Passaic County had been annexed by Bergen County; but because Bergen County was under federal jurisdiction it retained some vestiges of its rural character - such as large areas then within township 12 north which formed part of Rahway Township until 1925 when it became part of Union City. In 1845 developer Augustus Kelley started construction on what would become known as The Great Barrington Canal which linked Rahway with Bordentown and other towns across Monmouthshire Plain; but by 1850 only about half the canal had been completed due to financial problems associated with industrialization - though today most people remember Kelley's original proposal for a canal through central Passaic rather than its eventual development into an expressway slicing through eastern Jersey like so many others during that decade. John Fenton bought 1/2 mile (0.8 km) eastward along Main Street from George Washington Vanderbilt Jr., founder and first president emeritusof Vandyke & Company tobacco merchants, for $4 per acre (.25 kg/ha) – more than any other person ever paid for land south of waivers established by President James Kinkaid prior to his retirement from office in 1792! Fenton began farming this property soon after purchase; it covered 6 square miles (.27 km²). One reason behind Fenton’s decision to farm this area was his belief that cattle could not survive long inside urban areas where water supplies were scarce: “A woolen spinning machine will spin yarn better than an animal can’t even without water going into it...I am convinced beef cannot live very well where they are drawn near water [but] I should be hard put to show how mutton can do well...when you get out upon these plains alluvial soil you find plenty o’ good places for raising cattle." Passaic grew rapidly during World War II due largely to wartime production needs at local factories related to munitions manufacturing including those run by American Cyanamid and Ford Motor Company among others; construction continued until 1949 when hostilities ended and federal control passed back over New Jersey government affairs

The first European to set foot in what is now Passaic was Nicholas-Jacques Conte on July 1, 1695. He built a cabin on the present-day banks of the Hackensack River. Passaic was incorporated as a borough on March 3, 1868, from parts of Bergen and Union counties. When county boundaries moved in 1886, Passaic became part of Morris County. The Borough Council is composed of five members who are elected at-large with no switchback requirement; however they must serve three year terms (currently 2 years). Members term begins when they are registered to vote and ends when they step down or are removed from office by resolution passed by majority vote at an election held within one year after leaving office or being impeached or convicted thereof
