Passaic is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 34,752. The name "Passaic" is derived from the Native American word paska or path (a long linear peninsula), which was used to describe the area where today's Borough of Passaic and other towns are located. The first Europeans to explore Passaic were Giovanni da Verrazzano and Giovanni de Porto in 1524. The Bucks County seat at Paterson was moved to Newark in 1777 after it became part of Pennsylvania. In 1814, when New Jersey became a state, Passaic received township status from Middlesex County. On May 17, 1837, during the same year as Trenton’s incorporation into New Jersey, Passaic received its own charter from George Washington as an incorporated town with a population of 10 souls. In 1861-1865 Union General John Pemberton besieged and captured Rahway while marching through North Jersey on his way to Valley Forge; he halted at Rahway for dinner on July 4th before continuing his march that evening over land that now forms Princeton Township and parts of Hackensack and Bergen Counties. The engagement is still commemorated by a local military park located east of Rahway near Interstate 95 exit 25A known as Pemberton Park after Union General John Pemberton himself

Passaic was once a small township in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The area now comprising Passaic was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in the early 17th century. By 1800, the township had a population of just over 1,000 people. However, during the American Revolutionary War, Passaic sided with America and fought on the side of the United States against Great Britain. In 1784, Passaic became part of what is now Union County. In 1814, following the creation of West Jersey as part of New Jersey from portions of Middlesex and Union counties, Passaic became a separate town within Union County. The town's population grew rapidly during this time; it reached 7,500 by 1828. In 1838, Passaic incorporated as a city and remains an independent municipality to this day. During World War II, Passaic served as one of the most important cities in support of the war effort; its nickname "The Arsenal" came from its role as both a manufacturing center for munitions production and also as an important transit hub for soldiers moving between military bases across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. After World War II ended, however, the city experienced rapid growth; it reached 20,000 residents by 1960. Today passic mayor Ignacio Arroyo attributes much of that progress to his city's aggressive economic development policies which he called "New Yorkization".
The Passaic Valley has been inhabited by the Lenape people for over a millennium. In 1755, the British and their French allies defeated the Dutch in the Battle of Fort Lee and took control of New Netherland. The British granted land to settlers in the valley, which included parts of what is now Passaic County. The area became known as Bergen County after its first county seat, Bergen City. After independence from Great Britain, New Jersey was divided into three counties: Bergen County, Essex County, and Union County. As a result of this division, Passaic Valley residents were generally considered part of Essex or Union County. However, beginning in 1836, Passaic Valley residents began to be counted in Bergen County when that county was created from portions of Union and Bergen Counties.
