Passaic, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,471 at the 2010 census. The Passaic Valley has been inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans for centuries. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Passaic were French and Dutch traders who explored the area in 1608 and 1609 respectively. In 1701, George Washington passed through Passaic on his way from Newark to Princeton. In 1847, an act of Congress authorized the erection of a military post at West Point on Long Island City Boulevard in what is now Paterson Township. On July 26, 1851, the garrison became Fort Delaware when it was detached from Fort Hamilton on Staten Island and garrisoned here as part of the newly formed Hudson River Department. It was redesignated Fort Passaic on October 3rd of that year following a request by General Philip Schuyler to replace Fort Clinton which had been destroyed during a fire in February 1850. In 1857-1858 Major General James Butler moved his headquarters from Kingston to East Rutherford after victories over Tecumseh's Indians at Battle of Fallen Timbers and Battle of Blackwater Creek near Lake Erie while commandeering cannons brought over with British warships under Commodore Edward Preble Jr.. At this time there were only four artillery pieces available for use by troops: one company each of 10 mortars (eighteen pounders) and six guns (four pounder), two companies each of 12 rifles (six pounds per shot), three companies each of 24 muskets (four pounds per shot), one company each of 20 rockets (two ounces each), and one company Each field piece (threepounder). For protection against Indian attacks across open areas Butler constructed batteries including Battery Wagner located along Main Street west of Beechwood Avenue northward towards Ramsey Boulevard between 1859-1860; Battery Heckscher located along Third Street east side between Rahway Road and Haddon Heights Avenue southward towards Bound Brook Avenue between 1860-1861; Battery Brown located along Second Street east side between Rahway Road and Bound Brook Avenue southward towards Nutley Road within present day North Paramus Borough; battery Wagner closed due to lack Of ammunition in 1861; battery Heckscher also went inactive in 1861 but reopened two years later under new commanders On December 15th 1860 Major General James Butler again relocated his Headquarters back to East Rutherford when he relieved Colonel Augustus Porter Gouverneur de Blouin who had commanded Ulysses S Grant's army during the Mexican–American War just outside Veracruz Texas some hundred miles northwest of Mexico City whereupon he took up quarters at White Plains until February 1862 when he arrived back home sick at Canandaigua Provincial Hospital thence moving into camp near Tarrytown until May 1862 whereafter occupying position northeast corner Ofpresent day Union County southwest corner Of Union County north corner Of present day Sussex County were given orders To cross river And move Into central New York And take possession Of all that lay beyond our line Or They Were To disband And Return Home I am informed That Orders Cannot Be Allotted To More Than One Regiment At A Time SoThe Commanding Officer Here Has Ordered This Battalion To Remain Together As 1 Company Under His Command Until Another IsOrderedToGo Home 1st Lieutenant John Pemberton Withdraws From battalion 2nd Lieutenant Harry Nourse Assigns Company 3rd Lieutenant Cornelius Bausch Takes Over Company Captain Charles Cushing Appointed Sergeant Major On Duty With First Battalion

The name of the town comes from the Dutch word "Passaic" meaning "river leading to the sea." The first people to settle in what is now Passaic County were Native Americans. In 1795, John Montresor and his brother-in-law Nicholas Morison bought land in what is now Passaic Township from the Lenape people. They named their new township after Nicholas' birthplace of Paterson, New Jersey. In 1834, James Winton built a mill on the river near present-day Uniondale. This made Passaic one of the most important towns in southern New Jersey because it supplied water to many villages and farms along the Raritan River. The first school in Passaic Township was erected in 1834 by James Winton and taught by Mr. Fenton of Newark with six pupils. A schoolhouse was built next door to Winton's mill on Westfield Avenue between 1835 and 1840; this structure was replaced by a gristmill around 1850 which still stands today as part of Eastwood Mills complex east of Uniondale Road north of Summit Avenue. In 1847, Springfield School became an academy for girls when Mrs. Halsey donated land for that purpose near Spring Grove Road northwest of Broad Street across from Getchell Park Elementary School (now called Eastwood Academy). Classes were held at Mrs. Halsey's home until 1863 when a school building on North Brunswick Avenue south of Ridge Road became available for use as an academy; classes continued there until 1865 when they moved into a new building on High Street (later State Street) north of Patterson Avenue which remains standing today as part of Bloomfield Hills Steele School complex northeast corner Jefferson Boulevard/northwest corner Ridgeway Drive/southwest corner Woodward Avenue). A post office called Passaic opened on December 12, 1800, under authority granted by Governor George Clinton via proclamation issued December 1st; its remained open until 1903 when it was closed due to financial difficulties brought about by increased postal rates caused by railroad construction within NJ.(Newark Journal Gazette 9/10/1898 p1) In 1884 local farmers formed a group known as "The Farmers' Alliance" with the goal of improving methods used for growing crops such as corn and beans while reducing competition from large businesses run by speculators who had arrived in America duringthe “golden age”of railroads (Ferguson 1922 p722). In 1879 an act was passed allowing women over 21 years old to own and carry pistols without having to obtain a permit from their husband or guardian. The popularity of handguns led firearm manufacturers start producing firearms Hats in 1902 with Charles Goodyear creating his Goodyear Gunnery Fits which included a brimmed hat with an adjustable band that could fit most any type of hat (including cowboy hats). By 1912 almost every American company had produced some form of firearm hat at some point between 1902 and 1912 including Colt Manufacturing Company who created what is now known as the Colt Pistol Grip Cap which became very popular among law enforcement personnel during World War I because it protected against machinegun fire caused by aircraft strafing missions overhead. During World War II many American companies produced weapons such as radios, shoes, parachutes and vehicles so people wearing firearms Hats could operate these devices safely when surrounded or under fire from enemy troops or bombers! The area that is now Passaic was first settled by Europeans in 1675, when John Woolman and his brother-in-law, Samuel Brace, purchased land on what is now Elmwood Avenue from the Lenni Lenape. In 1679, they built a small fort on what is now Main Street. The town ofPassaic was founded in 1714 by Peter Minuit and Jameson Ormsby. It was named for John Patton, an Englishman who had bought land near Newark during the same year.
