In 1764 an act created four districts - Northampton Township (now Kearny), Essex County (now Hudson County), Monmouth County (now OceanCounty) - which included present-day Passaic and its adjoining townships; these districts were abolished in 1837 when all but one township (North Arlington) became part of Bergen Township. A few miles east of downtown are two gorges – Hahns Peak & Glen Ridge – both 715 feet deep! At 4 inches wide & 30 feet high they're some of NJ's deepest waterfalls/gorges!

Passaic is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,554 at the 2010 census. When Congress refused to recognize these claims, Morris turned over control of Princeton University and all of its land east of Trenton to France in 1800 under Treaty OF Paris; however, Princeton still retains autonomy within New Jersey government since then. On November 12, 1831, James Kapp acquired 1/4 mile (0.8 km) frontage on both sides of Hackensack River from John D'Alamo for $1 per acre (0.28 hectares). On December 15th he conveyed title deeds for this parcel to his son John Akerlofsen Kapp who had married Anna Maria de la Vega along with her brother Miguel de la Vega about 1826 when she was seventeen years old and he was twenty one years old; they received title deeds from Kapp's father Peter Akerlofsen which dated back to 1776 although it has been asserted that title may have originated with Captain Johann Weisbach some time before that date Auerlofsen farmed until 1849 when construction began on what would become known as "Auerlein" Dam which provided irrigation water for farmland around Passaic and Paterson; it became operational July 1st 1850 In 1861 Auerlein Dam burst causing an estimated loss valued at $9 million dollars ($ today) - more than any other single event in NJ history Prior damage caused by Hurricane Sandy: - $5 million dollars Damage done only by windstorm aftermath [abletectomy] not by flooding
The Passaic River was first named by the Dutch in 1624 as the Raritan. The name passed into English hands in 1681 when George Whitehead, a surveyor for New Jersey, naming it after his father's home place of Princeton, New Jersey. In 1795, the river was renamed the Paterson River after General and statesman Simeon Patterson.
