Paramus was founded on November 3rd, 1803 by George Washington and his men as Township No. 7 in Middlesex County. The township became a section of Bergen County on April 14th, 1912 The Paramus Volunteer Fire Department was organized on May 16th, 1915 and currently has over 280 firefighters serving in 20 municipalities throughout Monmouth County In 1916 Paramus annexed Westwood which had previously been part of East Brunswick Township On March 15th, 2017 it was announced that Paramus would be joining forces with Hackensack to form the new Hackensack-Paramus Metropolitan Statistical Area

Paramus, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 71,922 at the 2010 census. Paramus is located on the north side of Paramus Lake. It is bordered by Westwood to the east and south, Englewood to the west and north, and South Hackensack to the northwest. The first occupants of what is now Paramus were Native Americans who lived there before European settlers arrived in 1664. George Washington and his attendants visited Paramus on September 17, 1776 while marching through Bergen County in support of American independence from Great Britain. On March 10th 1812 a group of thirteen men led by Captain John Smith built a cabin at what is now Station Road and East Dune Road for themselves on land that had been donated by Simon Teague Behnke (1740-1814), an Englishman who had immigrated to North America in 1781 with his family. In 1851 residents of Englewood petitioned for incorporation as a town; however this request was refused because it conflicted with that of Paramus which was still considered part of Bergen County. On October 15th 1875 Paramus became one hundred percent independent when it voted to secede from Bergen County and form its own government with its own mayor, judiciary, police force and other basic functions carrying over into neighboring Westwood Township which also declared itself an independent municipality on November 5th that year. On December 4th 1898 two villages merged intoParamus: Englewood becoming part ofParamus while WestWOOD continued as West Hackensack Township until 1974 when it too merged into Paramus with full autonomy including all local taxes without any sharing in responsibility between agencies or services between them like streetlights or garbage collection! An interesting tidbit about this merger is that both villages were given their current namesakes back then even though they are no longer present within their respective borders today! So not only did Paramus get two villages but also those municipalities got back everything they gave up! Additionally Englewood has since reverted back to its original name once again!
