Paramus is located on the Paramus-Middlesex County line and has a twin city relationship with Paterson, New Jersey. It is part of the Paterson– Passaic Junction metropolitan area. The first settlers to Paramus were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664 from Rotterdam. They named the land "Het Vliet" (the Meadows). In 1814, General John Brooks laid out an alternate plan for Paramus which became known as The Town Plan of 1814. On July 1, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, British forces burned down many of the homes and farms in what is now Paramus Township after seizing guns and munitions from local patriots fighting for independence against Great Britain. The burning helped start the township's name change from Het Vliet to Paramus Township on November 3rd of that year by order of Governor Tryon. Paramus was incorporated as a borough on March 14th, 1846 by act of Senate No. 294; it was reincorporated as a village on February 5th of that year by Act No. 727 of 1860; and finally became a town on October 15th, 1912 by act of Assembly No. 473A through 474A." Paramus starts its history with two fires: one started by British forces during the American Revolution and another started by locals when they burned down some English-owned homes in 1776 (not related to current day Paramuss).
