Paramus is located on the border of Passaic and Bergen Counties and crossed by Interstate 95. Paramus is bordered by Westwood to the south and east; East Rutherford to the north; Union City to the west; and Parsippany Township to the northwest. The first settler in what is now Paramus was George Washington who arrived there with his family in 1764. The area that includes Paramus was part of Middlesex County until 1814 when it became Passaic County. In 1868, Parsippany Township was added to Paramus Township along with other townships in Bergen County. On October 1, 1920, the county line between Bergen and Passaic counties were shifted eastward by two miles (3 km). Paramus has been home to several large companies such as Ford Motor Company and Eli Lilly & Co., which makes it a major manufacturing center for portions of northern New Jersey. Other businesses include North American Bancorp (NAB) headquarters before it moved out of town in 2001, Macy's department store before being taken over by JCPenney in 2003, then Kohl's Department Store before going bankrupt in 2013. In addition to its many businesses, Paramussburg Elementary School offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade education as well as After-school programs for children who cannot attend school during regular hours due to extracurricular activities or special needs. Paramus, New Jersey is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,865 at the 2010 census. Paramus is located on the west bank of the Hackensack River and is bordered by East Orange to the north, Union City to the east, Paterson to the south and West Orange to the west. Paramus was founded in 1814 as a result of an effort by George Washington to create a central location for his administration and defense against attacks from Atlantic City on its eastern border. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its position on Route 9 between Newark and Manhattan and its location near railroads that made it an easily accessible market place for goods. Paramus also developed into an important center for education with several colleges and universities located there including Monmouth University (now Monmouth College), Wayne State University (now Wayne State University-Detroit), then Rutgers–Newark (now Rutgers University) and finally Seton Hall University (now Seton Hall University). During World War II Paramus played an important role as one of only two American towns in Northern New Jersey that did not retreat when German forces invaded America on September 11th, 1941. On December 12th of that year local businesses helped support a United States military airlift transporting troops into Europe. Paramus remains one of just two American communities in North America to remain operational after hostilities ended without any loss or damage. Afterward many residents moved away but some continue to live there today including members of Congress who were born or raised here such as Madeleine Albright and Cory Booker
