In 1912, the New York State Rifle Association donated $10,000 for the construction of a rifle range and training ground within Palisades Park. The rifle range and training ground were named after Commodore George Dewey, who had served as Governor of New York during World War I. In 1924-1925, the New York State Parks Commission installed a metal detector on North Ave., which made it possible for people to shoot targets without having to worry about getting shot by an animal or person.

In 1916-1917 during World War I Monmouth County residents took up arms against German forces who had invaded their county looking for food sources from farms inside Jersey City proper along with other parts of Monmouth County bordering Pennsylvania Dutchland (now Atlantic County). This event is often called "TheBattleOfTheBorders." A group known as “The Pioneers” fought three days straight along Route 28 between West Milford Road (now Montvale Boulevard) and Cottage Grove Drive NW before finally surrendering when they came under machine gun fire from German soldiers positioned atop hills overlooking Newark Airport (today's airport). At least one resident died as a result and many homes were destroyed or damaged during what is considered one of history's largest open warfare episodes in New Jersey history according to some historians .
