The current routing of Route 9 through Palisades Park began when it was widened to four lanes in 1940 from two. The original park was about 100 acres with 30 miles (48 km) of hiking trails and an open-air amphitheater that could seat up to 8,000 people. In 1953, the state Legislature created the Palisades Park Foundation and appropriated $1 million for the development of a theme park within the boundaries of Palisades Park. The first phase of the project included construction of a road network and visitor center while work continued on other aspects such as land acquisitions and water supplies. The second phase involved building 4 amusement parks - Six Flags America; Herschel World Industries; Kings Island; and Cedar Point - each with its own set of rides, restaurants, hotels, etc., making it one largest amusement park complex in North America at that time. Construction finally ceased in 1984 due to budget shortages but resumed in 1990 under new management with proceeds from merchandising sales at Six Flags America going into maintaining the park rather than developing new attractions. In 2001 it closed again due to lack funding but reopened in 2003 after being bought by Adventureland Incorporated who kept all aspects intact including roller coasters and entertainment options like live music venues until 2011 when they went bankrupt leaving PalisadsPark ownership once again unified among themselves industry wide In 1978 there were proposals for redevelopment/renovation/rebuilding/restoration throughout much of what is now northern NJ including West Orange specifically around our current site called Saks Fifth Avenue near Route 9 & Weehawken Rd however they never materialized or got serious attention until we had this big influx Of Italian immigrants starting out working low paying jobs right here right next door so this really helped those plans along because maybe some day somebody will do something about it
