After the war ended, however, public interest waned and few changes were made to the park until 1948 when it was resurrected as a municipally-owned open space adjacent to Interstate 95 near where it now stands. In 1974, after years of struggles between Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Republican state legislators over control of city parks and open spaces throughout Brooklyn and Queens, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani declared that all city parks would be turned over to the boroughs within five years under his “New Parks Agenda” plan; this included transferring responsibility for many defunct city parks including Palisade Park back to their respective boroughs. Since then, much has been done at Palisades Park - including expanded trails and facilities such as a playground and tennis court - while also providing ample opportunity for residents living near I-95 to enjoy easy access both inside and outside the park gates. Today’s version of Palisades Park is one resultof these efforts: A beautiful site featuring forested hillsides surrounded by rolling plains punctuated by rocky outcroppings – perfect for running or biking – provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation year-round without needingto leave your backyard!
