In 1814, it became part of Bergen County and was named for the palisades that lined the banks of the Hackensack River. The park was created in 1920 when it merged with neighboring Arlington Township. In spite of its name, Palisades Park does not have any cliffs or rocks that resemble those found near Mount Olympus in Greece or Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado. Instead, most of the park is made up of forested hills with a few small ponds and streams mixed among them. There are a variety of hiking trails available throughout much of Palisade Park including: an 8-mile loop trail called "The Woods" which takes you through dense chestnut trees, huckleberry bushes, wild apples and other tree species; a 10-mile loop trail called "Hillsborough Ridge"; a 5-mile nature trail known as "Pinecrest Gulch"; three 10-minute loops totaling 15 miles; two 2-mile runs; and one 3½-mile hike/run called "Crystal Pond". There are also playgrounds for children as well as tennis courts, basketball Courts, football fields and baseball diamonds on various properties within the park boundaries

The Palisades Park, New Jersey community was founded in 1795 by the Dutch East India Company. The area now includes the borough of Palisades and the unincorporated communities of Glen Ridge, Indian Head, Upper Saddle River and West Babylon. The Palisades Park region became part of English America after the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution in 1783. The area that became Palisades Park was part of Westchester County until it was annexed by New York City in 1898. In 1825, a group of Revolutionary War veterans from New York City formed a military regiment called "The Americans" to support General George Washington's war effort against Great Britain. After Washington's death in 1809, his troops disbanded and many went home. A few remain today as members of Veterans Of Foreign Wars (VFW). In 1827, John D'Alvo purchased land at present-day 9th Avenue and 20th Street for $2 per acre from Benjamin Franklin Smith Jr., one of several investors who participated in what is known as the Farmingdale Purchase. The land included woods and meadows that were used for grazing animals and later became a public parkland. At first named Deer Park after Mr. D'Alvo's deer farm near there (now Parkside Drive), it opened to the public on April 15, 1830 under Governor Nathanial Dodge. The original name change may have been because so much attention had been paid to Fort Lee during President Andrew Johnson's tenure as Commander-in-Chief (18 Ulysses S Grant) that no mention was made of Deer Park or nearby Cherry Hill when Johnson visited on October 3rd 1865; this caused some controversy since both locations lay within city limits at that time. Although originally an open field measuring only 4 acres with dirt roads leading to it from adjacent parcels owned by prominent citizens, Deer Park grew over time into a large tract containing 10 hectares or 21 acres which featured tennis courts, a Riding School for horses and cows/pets, rifle ranges etc... On November 27th 1840 then Mayor Nicholas Seaton announced plans to beautify what he called "a rough neighborhood". He solicited donations from citizens for $1 each towards construction costs including paving sidewalks around every street corner inside and outside parks boundaries as well as painting all public buildings red with white lettering stating: "FAMILY PARK - FREE FOR ALL". Work began immediately on improving pedestrian crossings at intersections including replacing low posts with larger ones while also reopening old driveways where necessary so pedestrians could cross without getting lost among tall trees! Streetscape improvements continued into the 1850s with new sidewalks being laid down near ponds and streams located throughoutPalisades Park proper while other areas such as Glen Ridge received more modest repairs focusing more on keeping trails clean rather than adding pavement altogether... By 1860 most streets had been resurfaced except Oneonta Road which still followed its original route through thick stands of pine trees bisected by deep ravines running east-west... However even Oneonta road experienced some arterialization during this period with two new turnarounds making access along long stretches difficult if not impossible... In 1870 James Buchanan donated 5200 feet² or 53 rods² or 0.8 hectare² Block #246 adjoining White Sands Lake becoming one half shareholding in creation thereof between trustees appointed thereto pursuant to state law enacted March 2d 1870 viz.: Moses Levy & Cornelius Vanderbilt & others Withdrawing their interest therein Decreasing value thereby rendering free forever any person holding such shares This donation increased State funding available for purposes connected therewith Which resulted in extensive alterations being made both inside & outside park boundaries including erectionof numerous pedestals carrying various STATElogos & Pictorial Devices commemorating this event Most notably: THE PALISADES PARK NATIONAL PARK - NOW OWNED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT On July 16th 1903 Diagram No 1 shows how close different parts are geographically speaking within Borough OF PALISADES PARK TODAY WITHIN CITIES OF NEW YORK CITY INCLUDING MOSES LEWY AND JAMES Buchanan Sr.} One important aspect surrounding early development within Palisade Park were deed restrictions placed upon certain landowners providing guidance about who could build where based upon their property values at that time.. These restrictions discouraged primarily but not exclusively wealthy farmers from building too close together becoming instead blocks bounded by current 7th Ave., 20th St., Mt Prospect Rd., Indian Head Rd., Glen Ridge Rd./Hwy 822 WEST Babylon RD., Upper Saddle River RD./WACKENHEIMS RIDGE RD./PARKSIDE DRIVE

In 1814, the United States acquired the land from Pennsylvania and renamed it Palisades Park.
