The Palisades Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The Palisades Park CDP borders on Interstate 495 to the north and east, and on Bear Mountain to the south. The Palisades are a range of hills that run along what used to be Old Lyme Township in Westchester County. They were first developed as farmland by early settlers who named them after two of their sons: John Palisades (1775–1846), an American Revolutionary War general and delegate from Long Island; and George Washington's grandson John Adams (1785–1849). As development expanded into this area in the 19th century, people began calling these hills "the palisades," which owed its name to one of their original residents, Nicholas Roosevelt (1768–1847), one of several men who accompanied General George Washington on his attack against Hessian troops at Princeton Heights on July 12, 1777. In 1874, President Ulysses S. Grant ordered federal lands within Westchester County inventoried under the Morrill Act and included much of what is now Palisade Park. The act allowed for grants of land to be allocated among states based on population density rather than acreage or natural resources so that public works could be built without hindrance from state legislatures. In 1882, Congress amended Morrill Act §9(a) to give further jurisdiction over CDPs within Westchester County for local governments formed thereunder according to specific provisions of that section including “the acquisition or erection by said government any building or structure not exempted by law from taxation” subject only to such rules as may be prescribed by law governing such acquisitions or erections not exceeding $1,000 per annum in value per property acquired or erected without special compensation excepting freehold titles where no personal gain accrues thereto; thus creating Village Board forme d’Etat with powers similar but not identical with those vested in municipalities pursuant to other sections of this chapter [of Constitution]. In 1907 when major revisions were made to New York State's education laws – specifically around school funding – parts of Old Lyme Township were annexed intopalisade park while other areas including parts annexed into Harrisonburg went unincorporated and remained part of Westchester County until 1984 when they became part of Rockland County. On May 3rd 1916 members OFWU Local 1021 took arms against US military presence in NJ during WWI at Mt Laurel War Memorial Garden located just outside town limits near today’s intersection off exit 16A off I-495 & Rte 914
