The first inhabitants of what is now Ocean City were Lenape Indians who hunted and collected shellfish in the area. In 1664, English colonists arrived on the East Coast and named this place "New £ashantown" after their then-Governor of Virginia Sir Thomas Fairfax. The town began as a small fishing village with just a few hundred residents in 1795 when Congress granted it land for an army barracks. The town grew rapidly because of its location on one of America's busiest shipping routes and its ability to provide employment for many people from surrounding areas. In 1851, President James K Polk issued Executive Order 9771 which recognized that Ocean City was an important port for transportation along America's east coast. As a result, dredging operations started in earnest to improve access to the harbor and make it more usable for ships transporting goods across America's waters. This activity increased during World War II when oceanography became more important due to Nazi Germany's efforts to blockade Allied ports using submarines; however, by 1945 all new construction had stopped due to American war production priorities." During World War II there were many Navy battles fought off or near shore in or around present day: Midway (1942), Leyte Gulf ( 1944), Philippine Sea ( 1944), Coral Sea ( 1942-1944) and Battle of Saipan ( 1945). Many local homes were destroyed or heavily damaged during these engagements such as Oneal House which was completely destroyed by submarine USS Oriskany while anchored off Long Island in July 1945; however much remains today still visible from those days including Destroyers Wasp(1945), Rangoon(1946) and Bangor(1949). 1/4 mile offshore from Oneal House lies another notable sunken ship - USS Mason which sank on July 29th 1945 with all hands following torpedoes fired from USS Mason by Japanese submarine I-15 about 7 miles south-west of Oneal House under cover of darkness
