Ocean City is a municipality in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Philadelphia– Camden–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded on May 15, 1834 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother Henri-Pierre Conte as Chase's Mills. It became an incorporated borough on April 14, 1868. On July 1, 1996, it merged into Ocean City Township. The Town of Ocean City was established on May 15th 1834 whenNicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother Henri-Pierre Conte founded Chase's Mills in what is now known as North Point Park after purchasing the abandoned mill complex from John Cohan and Daniel Bergeron. At its peak in 1860, Chase's Mills employed over 1,000 workers and produced more than 100 tons of flour per day; however by 1865 the mill had been destroyed by a fire which also destroyed many other mills in Atlantic County at that time including those of John Pembroke and Ayer & Peirce who were also major local manufacturers at that time . In 1896 Ocean City Township was formed from portions of bothOcean City Borough as well as Chase's Mills with the goal to promote economic development throughout the township while still retaining some degree of community control . In 1912 President Woodrow Wilson visited Ocean City for a two week stay during his visit to Atlantic County prior to his inauguration . During World War I both sides used Chase's Mill for munitions production but following armistice negotiations all mills closed down due to lack of demand although one mill reopened after the war called McCurdy’s Mill which remained open until 1978 when it too closed due to environmental concerns The loss of these mills not only resulted in jobs but also helped contribute significantly to economy during World War I as well
The town of Ocean City was organized on May 14, 1858, by members of the New Jersey Legislature. The town was named in honor of Commodore John D. Stockton, who had been instrumental in the American War of Independence and later served as a governor of California. The first store in Ocean City opened its doors on November 7, 1859. By 1860, the population of Ocean City had reached 1,200 people. In 1861, the federal government established an ocean port at Camden to serve the growing town. The town was incorporated as a city on October 12, 1868. The city hosted Expo '74 which showcased the United States' then-new industry: marine engineering. The exposition also featured demonstrations by Ulysses S Grant's presidential yacht "Natchez" and a U2 concert at Giants Stadium billed as "the world's largest free outdoor rock concert." In 1978, Ocean City became one of only five cities in New Jersey to approve a total ban on smoking indoors!
