The area had been explored by Europeans since 1524 when Giovanni da Verrazzano charted the area for Spain under Captain Juan de Torres In 1861 Stevens organized a group of farmers to purchase land from the Dutch East India Company for $10 per acre (the cost at that time being about $2 million). On July 1, 1871 they proclaimed themselves " towns in name only" when they erected a flagpole atop long beach and named it after their patron saint - St Johns parish - which included portions of what is now Atlantic County. By 1875 there were 300 people living in Ocean City; however it would not be until 1907 that it would become anofficial municipality with its own government and school system

As a result of this merger process—which also involved creation of several other local government bodies—OceaniaCity experienced rapid growth during the early 21st century including significant population increases in areas such as East Beach & Boardwalk (2001 Census: 1001), North Beach (2002 Census: 901), South Beach (2003 Census: 801) and Central Park which reached 1,500 residents by 2005 according to unofficial estimates. During this time period too there was substantial investment in infrastructure including new roads & bridges as well as expansions to existing businesses including casinos & restaurants; while some containalees have seendeclines over time due primarily to conflict with neighboring municipalities or economic conditions outside their control such as ferry docks being taken over by luxury cruise lines or housing developments encroaching upon natural resources like tidal bays/. However overall it can be said that despite some challenges such development has continued unabated throughout most recent decade with only minor fluctuations due mainly to changing political landscape or events beyond our control
The first settlement in Ocean City was made by the Dutch in 1664. It was named Venetia and later changed to New Amsterdam. The English took over the colony in 1738, renamed it Philadelphia and built a Fort Delaware here. In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington moved his army from Philadelphia to Ocean City to confront British forces. The Battle of Princeton ensued, and as a result, New York City became an independent state and Patriot forces took control of the city. The town prospered through the war, but declined after its independence came about. In 1814, Congress passed a bill that placed Ocean City on U.S. soil as part of Camden County; it remained part of Camden County until 1974 when it became fully within Jersey County.
