The city of Ocean City was founded on July 29, 1857, by Dutchmen and Germans. It became an important seaport on the Eastern Shore of Maryland due to its location at the mouth of the Delaware River. During World War II, Ocean City played a significant role in the Allied war effort as it was home to both the United States Naval Air Station (NAS) and the British Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm Station (FAS). NAS operator Boeing created one of America's most famous naval airfields during World War II with its planes stationed here including Hurricane jets and combat aircraft such as F-14 Tomcat fighters. In 1945, NAS operations were transferred to RAF Valley airport nearby after NAS landings in Europe ended. In 1957, Ocean City amalgamated with adjacent Camden County to form New Jersey's third largest city by population. The merger made Ocean City one of only two cities in New Jersey that had been formed since colonial times without any reference to their original settlements or cultures. One reason for this unusual situation was that Camden County had been largely agricultural whileOcean City had become a major port and industrial center. As new industries increased cotton production and transportation costs came down, Camden County shrank while Ocean City grew faster than either county could keep up. Today, much of what once made Ocean City so successful has been replaced by high-rise buildings and grandiose developments such as Broadwalk Place which overlooks Monmouth Bay. However, many old buildings remain popular tourist destinations including the USS Constitution Museum which is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm; Asbury Park’s Gothic Revival landmark referred to as “the highest point on tidal shoreline in America”;and The Boardwalk which offers a variety of amusement attractions along its 2 miles (3 km) long beachfront promenade including restaurants, hotels, beacheside cinemas and several amusements parks like Jones Beach Amusement Park located within walking distance from downtown areas like CNJ Cruise Terminal and Atlantic Avenue shopping mall
On September 26, 1876, the first train to come through Ocean City arrived. The town was founded by Augustus Englebrecht and his wife Catharine on what is now known as Englebrecht Boulevard. The town annexed neighboring townships in 1879, becoming a city on May 1, 1881. On December 12 of that year, Ocean City became the first municipality in New Jersey to be approved by the state government. The city's first mayor was Frank Bendixen. In 1912, Mayor John Puskarman dedicated a statue of Commodore John Stevens at the端coastal seawall. In 1916-1917, Oceancity experienced its worst flood in years when over 100 feet (30m) of water flooded sections of downtown and some homes along the beach. In 1928-1929, construction began on an oceanfront stadium which would serve as home field for both Ocean City and Monmouth County High School football teams until it was destroyed by a fire in 1951. In 1938-1939, Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Atlantic City and caused extensive damage across much of New Jersey including significant flooding within Ocean City limits. On October 15th 1939, during World War II (WWII), USS "Perry" sunk off the coast of Long Branch after catching fire while moored there towing supplies from shipyards ashore
