The first Mayor of Ocean City was John Fenton who served from 1872-1875; he also served as Chairman of the first Municipal Council which met monthly at various locations until 1895 when Borough President Theo Blevins directed that all future municipal meetings take place at dockside locations due to increased shipping traffic around Cape May Bayou (the mouth of Delaware River) thereby eliminating numerous hillsides between those three boroughs harboring factories and other commercial development north of Broad Street downtown where Governmental buildings now stand including both State House and Court Annexes – one building still housing this function – all within walking distance of each other making it possible for citizens to enjoy their civic responsibilities without having to leave their homes In 1911–12 local developer Charles Aiken purchased land just south of Broad Street between North Market Road/Great America Parkway and West Egg Harbor Avenue for what would become known as The amusement park complex or simply The Parkland which opened on October 15th 1912 serving primarily as a resort with carnival rides, games like checkers (pinball), billiards, golf courses etc., along with picnic areas including a beach volleyball court specifically built for that purpose beside an oceanfront swimming pool flanked by two large ferris wheels

The city was founded on December 12, 1854 by Commodore John Stevens and Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Smith as a port for shipbuilding and fishing. It became an important commercial center during the early 20th century, with its demise coming in the 1960s as a result of suburbanization. Today, it is a small coastal town with a population of around 90,000 people. The history of Ocean City goes back to December 12th 1854 when Commodore John Stevens and Lieutenant Colonel George Washington Smith disembarked from their USS Constitution at the then-newport landing beach in what is now known as Ocean City. They were looking for a new home for their shipbuilding company which had been established just two months earlier on October 11th 1850 by Captain Robert Fulton at Point Breeze. The two men soon realized that they needed more land to build their ships so they purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of beachfront property from Samuel Purdy for $1 per acre ($47 per hectare). On December 12th 1854 the first steps were taken to make this new land workable as an actual town by erecting wharf facilities and constructing some houses for local workers who would help build the vessels being built at this new site: "The Commodore's Wharf" was originally built to house 10 hogsheads (3 barrels) of oil each day but today only remains as part of downtown Ocean City's street grid system." In less than one year since their purchase of Beach Road property #1 from Samuel Purdy, Commodore John Stevens' company had erected both "The Commodore's Wharf" (now known as "Downtown") and several other buildings including: A Storehouse or House", A Chapel or Place of Worship", An Inn or Hotel", A Machine Shop" &"A steamboat dock". In addition to these rudimentary structures there was also a large well located east side road between First Street & Third Avenue called Sandy Hook Creek which becameknown locally as ""The Frying Pan"" due to its wide surface area which could accommodate hundreds vessels at any given time without becoming clogged up like during high tide. At this point in time most sailors used eithershore ports such Philadelphia or Wilmington Delaware because those areas were closer to major markets such Boston MA & Charleston SC respectively...the reason why we find so few seamen listed sailing out into Deep Water Bay between 1792-1816...only 2 seamen list sailing out into Gulf Stream Bay between 1800-1801!” -Milton Bradley For local residents living near where things were happening within walking distance however nothing much happened until 1860 when WM&H Dock Co., later renamed Redington Dock Company began doing business here too!
