Gun hammer history in Ocean City, New Jersey began in 1875 when Captain John A. Hurlbut and his son John E. Hurlbut founded the Ocean City Rifle and Pistol Club. The club was dedicated to improving gunnery skills and practicing shooting at local concerts and fairs. In 1886, the Ocean City Rifle and Pistol Club became a true society, with its own clubhouse on Main Street in town. The club continued to meet regularly until 1912 when it disbanded due to financial difficulties. In 1922, the Ocean City Rifle & Pistol Club reformed as the "Ocean City Gunsmith's Association" which still meets today. The association is responsible for maintaining and regulating gunsmithing practices in Ocean County. In 1975, Captain John A. Hurlbut's grandson John E. Hurlbut donated an old shotgun from his father's collection to the association as a museum piece. The shotgun was used as part of a presentation about firearms at the library board meeting on November 3rd of that year. That same year, Captain JH's older son Captian Ira Hurlbut (John E.'s brother) died suddenly at age 44 while serving in World War II overseas.. His wife Lillian Kapp assigned her nephew Cpl./Rifleman Leroy Wolkiewicz (later State Senator) to take over management of their father's Shootin' Society organization which remained active until Captian Ira's death in 1984.. In 1987 Captian Ira’s widow sold all rights to their father’s Shootin’ Society organization including its clubhouse on Main Street building back then known as “The Gables” to Joe Friel who opened up shop there until 1993 when he closed shop because of lack of customers/sponsorships.. As seen below some former members of Captian Ira’s Shootin’ Society have kept active such as; current State Senator Leroy Wolkiewicz now running for office since 2013.; current Mayor Jon Richards; current Commodore Timothy Pugh

Ocean City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 170,763 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Atlantic County and one of the five boroughs of Camden County. The town was founded on an island in the Monmouth River by English colonists in 1664 as Fishing Island. In 1749, it became an incorporated town under the name of Easton. It attained its current name, Ocean City, on November 5, 1857 when it merged with Weston to form a single municipality under that name. The townships that make up Ocean City were first organized into separate municipalities on March 14, 1903 pursuant to an act of the New Jersey Legislature entitled "An Act to organize and improve certain portions of Township No. 2 (Atlantic)". On January 1, 1907 they were consolidated into one municipality pursuant to another act of the legislature called "An Act Relative to Certain Changes in Municipal boundaries within Atlantic County", which repealed all prior laws relating to separate municipalities within Atlantic County except for those relating to fishing islands and municipal court purposes only. On May 18, 1927 Neptune's Sound Electric Supply Company Limited filed suit against American Paper Mill Corporation for damages done during Hurricane Agnes; this case would eventually become known as Neptune's Sound v. American Paper Mill Corporation (1927). On July 1, 1951 referendum voters passed a resolution authorizing Ocean City annexation by Camden due to concerns about housing shortages then existent in other parts of Camden County caused by overcrowding within city limits and lack thereof available in neighboring townships following World War II-era influxes from surrounding counties such as Middlesex and Sussex Counties In 1959 the Gloucester Township government decided not to annex with Ocean City because it felt there was no real need or desire for such a large township outside of its borders while properties currently belonging to Gloucester Township were being used more expansively for local businesses than residential purposes; however both Gloucester Township officials and residents continue lobbying for annexation until today given their belief that if annexed Ocean City would have jurisdiction over most if not all proposed development within their township boundary including any potential reopening or expansion of Gloucester High School which closed down after 1997 despite numerous requests from community members There are currently three communities located adjacent/within walking distance or car ride of each other called North Beach Boulevard Corridor: Surfside Heights, Cliffwalk Heights & Sandwiches Cove which offer accessto beaches either from Shore Road or SE View Drive just minutes walk away from each other making it easyfor localsand tourists aliketo explore these areas without having TO travel too farfetched searchingFor somethingTo do

In 1851, the city reached its peak with an influx of immigrants from Europe who had just begun their journey to America. The town became known for its cheap housing and excellent nightlife. During World War II, Ocean City become one of the largest shipbuilding centers in America due to its proximity to naval yards located in nearby Camden. Due to this importance, many major warships were built here including USS Constitution (1845), USS Maine (1941), USS Lexington (1945) and USS Yorktown (1946). In recent years, Ocean City has undergone a significant redevelopment effort that has seen it become one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Jersey. This has included new restaurants, hotels and shopping malls – all of which have helped contribute to the city's resurgence over the past few decades.
