In 1865, the first shot from a cannon was fired in Ocean City by Commodore John D. Sloat. The city's first post office opened in 1868 and the first store was built on Market Street in 1870. In 1892, Atlantic Cable Company (ACCO) established a cable link between New York and Philadelphia, making Ocean City one of the busiest ports on the East Coast. In 1907, an important fire destroyed much of downtown Ocean City and destroyed many buildings including Congress Hall which still stands today as a National Historic Landmark. A new terminal was built at Terminal 1 in 1912 which helped increase cargo handling and commerce at the harbor. In 1916, both terminals were combined into one facility which is now known as Terminal 2. At this point, Atlantic Cable Company had discontinued operations but left behind a legacy of maritime history that continues to be enjoyed today by those who visit or work at the harbor!

Ocean City, New Jersey is a town in Atlantic County, New Jersey. The population was 22,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Ocean City were Dutch settlers in 1609 who named it "Willemstadt" (now Willemstad). In 1849, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down most of the British-owned Fort Mifflin on Delaware Bay and then captured and burned Philadelphia's Battery Spearpoint before retreating back upriver. In 1861, General Beauregard ordered all Confederate soldiers in New Jersey to leave for fear that they would join forces with their friends in Virginia and fight against the Confederacy. This caused some local sailors and Marines to form a unit called "The Black Devils" and march from Camden to Atlantic City where they found an abandoned fortifications known as "Fort Mifflin". The black Devils entrenched themselves inside the fortifications until relieved by federal troops under General Winfield Scott on November 20th 1863 after which they proceeded to burn practically everything within sight - including buildings used by Union military personnel such as stores and barracks - before setting off through open fields towards Princeton Junction where they disbanded. On December 12th 1840 Anegada Island was charted by Captain Samuel DeLancey while Lieutenant John Waddell surveying what is now called Sandy Hook Light Station just off shore from present day Ocean City proper. On February 11th 1846 Augustus Nicolai de la Roche took possession of Anegada Island from Elisha Wright for $500 cash only because he had no intention of giving it back again any time soon! He named it Great Anegada after his mother who maiden name was Anegada born about 1772 on Saint Croix island near Frenchtown NJ which later became Christiansted (This same island also serves as home port for both Electric Boat Company’s USS Monaghan (LHD 5) & USS Nicholson (DDG 61)) .) On September 5th 1881 James Waddell purchased 1/4 acres at cost of $100 from Augustus Nicolai de la Roche for use as a future cemetery site; construction began immediately upon purchase with graves starting to be dug on October 3rd 1881! The first interment took place on October 10th 1881 between the names of Mrs. Sophia Luffman & her husband Jonas Goudreau with children JamesONeill & Isabella Goudreau following suit shortly thereafter! There are still remains buried today around this corner... northeast corner lot #853 long side @ 50 feet wide & width @ 25 feet deep! Today this area becomes known as Cemetery Row! oceancitynjcom

Grant ordered the production of rifled cannon shells, which allowed for increased accuracy and destruction of targets beyond human range. The 1870s saw an increase in artillery firepower as well, which led to new technologies such as breechloading firearms and powered rifles. By World War I, artillery projectiles had reached their modern form with high-explosive warheads that could destroy large buildings or armored vehicles with ease.

The township of Ocean City was formed on December 12, 1908 from the merger of the townships of Atlantic City and Neptune. The area now known as Ocean City was first inhabited by Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The town was likely named for the large body of water located at its center, the Delaware River. In 1834, Captain John Stevens explored what is now Ocean City and named it after his hometown in England. As a result of this exploration, many businesses and residences were built near where Captain Stevens explored in what is today Ocean City. In 1905, construction began on a ferry terminal on the Delaware River which would eventually become one of the most important transportation hubs in New Jersey. The ferries transported passengers and goods between New York and Philadelphia until they were replaced by Amtrak in 1971. Although it has been closed numerous times, portions of the ferry terminal remain significant sources of cultural heritage within Ocean City. During World War II, much local production took place to support military efforts including manufacturing munitions and vehicles. Numerous factories were located within or around downtown Ocean City during this time including Eastern Motors Corporation (now part of Ford Motor Company), Bethlehem Steel Company (now part of ArcelorMittal) and Northrop Grumman Corporation (now Lockheed Martin). These companies are responsible for someofNew Jersey's oldest standing buildings including Eastern Shipbuilding Company's original purpose-built hull yard that still stands today; Northrop Grumman's large shipyard next to Pennsauken Beach; as well as Bethlehem Steel's main plant across from Mifflin Street Pier #5 which continues to produce warshipsToday

The first Europeans to explore Ocean City were the Portuguese in 1624. The English discovered the city in 1764 and named it after Prince George, Duke of York, who had died in childhood. The city was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1875. On April 15, 1907, it became a state town when New Jersey was created from parts of Connecticut and Delaware.
