In 1898, artillery batteries were moved from Philadelphia to Atlantic City and new munitions warehouses were built at Pier 21 and Main Street. These warehouses helped make Atlantic City one of the most important military ports in America as gunship crews used it as a base of operations while fighting both World War I and World War II. After two years of construction, work began on building the seawall that would keep sailors safe from potential threats from beneath the New Jersey coast during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. This project cost $34 million and is still ongoing today – making it one of the most expensive infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Ocean City History

However, large amounts of land were donated and soon new housing developments began to sprout up including Point Pleasant Village (now known as North Wildwood), BrickHouse Estates and Belle Isle Landing In 1916 oil rigs were sunk offLong Beach Peninsula after production ceased at Refinery No. 2 in Weehawken; this createdreamy water creatures called "phlegmheads" which fed on plankton in the bayou that extended into Long Beach In 1938 a group of developers purchased both point Pleasant Village and Belle Isle Landing from their owners for $1 million dollars creating what would becomeknown as Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC). OCDC quickly built an expansion program that included many new homes and businesses while preserving some of its original features such as Point Pleasant Village's white-painted cedar houses Today OCDC plays an important role in developing Ocean City with responsibilities such as managing public access to beaches, developing plans for environmental restoration projects, maintaining city facilities and providing marketing support for local businesses
